Resource Bus for Bedfordshire
Sight Concern Bedfordshire currently has 2 resource centres in Luton and Bedford town centres, where we can demonstrate and sell devices which will assist blind and visually impaired people with day to day living. We aim to provide an equipped Resource Bus to reach all of our clients in their home
January 2011 - December 2016
Sight Concern Bedfordshire
Visually impaired people have greater difficulty finding their way to new venues and they made need to visit us several times over the years as their sight deteriorates and they need further levels of support.
We are trying to provide better access to resources for all of our clients, regardless of whether they live in a town or rural village.
UPDATE DECEMBER 2010: £11,350 raised so far towards purchase of vehicle. PLEASE HELP US TO GET MOBILE.
A fully equipped resource bus would reach out into every part of the County and provide the same level of support for all of our clients wherever they live.
Clients would be able to see and try products before ordering them and be guided with adaptable IT packages designed specifically for the visually impaired.
Provide better access to resources to improve quality of life
Activities» The Resource Bus will go out in response to requests for it, but will also have a schedule of appointments at community events and SCB events.
Success will be...reaching out to at least 30% of our client base who have not had the opportunity to visit us in one of our 2 existing Resource Centres.
Raise the profile of Sight Concern Bedfordshire.
Activities» A SCB branded bus will help raise awareness among families of visually impaired people who may then refer a relative or friend to us for support.
Success will be...an improvement in our brand recognition such that we begin to receive unsolicited offers of support.
Sight Concern Bedfordshire's long term aim is to assist their clients in remaining independent and in their own homes for as long as possible. Our Community Support Workers are able to take a sample of products out with them on visits but by signposting clients to the Resource Bus, we can demonstrate the full range of products.
We will be asking for feedback from clients at the point of contact with regard to their experience and the choice of items available.
Risks include not being invited to community events. We have excellent working relationships with all of the councils in Bedfordshire and also with many other voluntary sector organisations, so would expect to be an attractive and welcome presence at many community events.
We will report every quarter on the movements of the Resource Bus, together with feedback reports from clients at the point of contact and sales reports for products purchased from the Resource Bus.

The Resource Bus would reach all parts of Bedfordshire from the North Bedfordshire villages to Cranfield and Leighton Buzzard in the West to Biggleswade in the East and Luton and Caddington in the South.
There are an estimated 10,000 people in the County (source: RNIB)with a visual impairment of which just 3,000 are registered. We are currently supporting 3,000 people in a variety of ways but would like to reach out to all 10,000 potential clients who are not accessing us for a variety of reasons. Initially it can be shock, also it can be for cultural reasons and/or poor information. We cover some of the most deprived postcode areas in the UK via wards in Luton and Bedford.
Sight Concern Bedfordshire is the only charity in the County of Bedfordshire providing hands on support to blind and partially sighted people.

Sue Fever is the Services and Outreach Manager who manages a team of Community Support Workers who would take take turns in driving the Resource Bus.
