Buskaid Music School
Buskaid runs a Music School in Diepkloof, Soweto, South Africa, where young people come to learn musical instruments - violin, viola, cello and double bass. We aim to transform lives and prospects through music.
Young people in Soweto have few opportunities to make music, and even fewer opportunities for constructive learning outside school time. In an area of social deprivation, it is easy for them to slide into drug and alcohol abuse.
The Buskaid Music School gives around 80 young people from Soweto the chance to engage in a constructive activity by learning the violin, viola, cello or double bass. Whether they go on to pursue a career in music, or in something completely different, Buskaid introduces them to the discipline of learning an instrument, and provides an activity for them to take part in after school and at weekends.
Support the Buskaid Music School and ensure its long-term survival.
Activities» To raise enough money from UK sources to fund 15 students per year at the Buskaid Music School.
Success will be raising sufficient funds to fund 15 students per year for the next three years.
The Buskaid Music School will give the young people who attend a valuable life skill, and enrich the community as a whole. Several Buskaid graduates are already earning their living as musicians.
Buskaid's director is in her 60s, and there is a risk that at some point she may wish to retire. We have dealt with this by recruiting another permanent teacher and establishing a teacher training programme among the senior students.
All supporters receive an annual newsletter, as well as more informal contact by email several times a year. Major donors will receive further updates depending on their particular area of interest.

Soweto is a township near Johannesburg and is an area of economic deprivation.
The students who attend the Buskaid Music School will be the initial beneficiaries, as well as their wider family and community who will have access to their performances. In the long term Buskaid graduates will share their skills with the wider community and some will go on to become teachers and professional musicians themselves.
Buskaid has been working in Soweto since 1997, and has extensive experience in this area.
