A Christmas Carol
Between 6-11 December 2010 help us continue creating festive fun for all the family by donating towards our annual Christmas production at the Citz. Next year's production is going to be A Christmas Carol - a colourful tale of Ebineezer Scrooge and his 3 visits from 3 very different ghosts...
December 2011 - January 2012
Charity information: Citizens Theatre Ltd
Magical Theatre for all
Every year the Citizens Theatre produces a very special Christmas show for all the family at its beautiful Victorian theatre, set a short walk from Glasgow city centre. The Citz is proud to offer something different from the traditional pantomime.
The current economic climate means that it is increasingly difficult to fund a large scale Christmas production and keep ticket prices affordable as well as to offer free workshops to schools and community groups.
Every year the Citizens seeks support for its Christmas production to ensure that residents of Glasgow can access affordable, quality theatre at Christmas.
Donations to the theatre will allow us to ensure that A Christmas Carol is as magical as previous award winning family shows such as Cinderella, The Wizard of Oz and Peter Pan. We will deliver a range of free workshops for schools and community groups. Support from our audiences will allow us to continue this important commitment.
To create an inventive and entertaining production of A Christmas Carol for all the family.
Activities» Performances taking place 2 and 3 times a day throughout December.
What success will look like
Success will be demonstrated in both the critical reviews of the production and audience feedback on their enjoyment of A Christmas Carol. We aim to reach 90% capacity overall.
To continue the Citizens commitment to providing quality, award winning theatre that is affordable.
Activities» Maximum ticket price will be £20, minimum ticket price will be £7.
What success will look like
Success will be demonstrated if new audiences are attracted to the theatre from a variety of areas in the city including those who cannot pay full price for their tickets.
To continue engaging with the communities around the theatre and making a significant difference
Activities» Free workshops for Primary and nursery schools in the southside area around the theatre.
» Free visits and performances for community partner organisations of the theatre.
» Family days at the theatre during Christmas performances including backstage tours, arts and crafts sessions and music.
What success will look like
The delivery of free workshops to all primary and nursery schools in the Gorbals and atleast 3 local community groups.Increased interaction and use of the theatre by local groups
The project will help to continue the Citizens commitment to providing an alternative to commercial Christmas shows in the city and to provide a quality theatrical experience that is affordable. The portfolio of education and outreach activities that form part of this project will help the theatre form links with the communities around it and cement its position as a central hub for community activity within the city. We will demonstrate success in the increased participation levels.
There is always a risk that the production will not sell well as the theatre faces increased competition within the city. This has not been our experience in the past as the Citizens has an increasing reputation for staging imaginative Christmas productions and our ticket prices are very competitive. The Citizens will ensure that the production is marketed within the city offering ticket deals and concessions to those on the lowest incomes.
Donors will receive regular updates in the run up to the production including casting/script updates and rehearsal news. Donors will be invited to a presentation by the Artistic Director on costumes/set and the inspiration for elements of the production. They will also be invited to attend the show

The theatre is based in the Gorbals, a short walk from Glasgow city centre. This diverse area of the city has been transformed in recent years but still faces significant social and economic challenges. The unusual location of the Citizens Theatre allied to its celebrated work, has contributed to its international reputation. The theatre is very much part of the history and heritage of the area and is a central hub for community creative activities. It is truly a citizen's theatre.
The residents of Glasgow and the surrounding area will benefit from this project including some of the most deprived parts of the city where access to and engagement with the arts has been limited. The Citizens Theatre has a long history of providing world class theatre to everyone.
The Citizens Theatre is based in the Gorbals which has traditionally been one of the more deprived areas of Glasgow. Although it is close to the city centre it is not in an area traditionally associated with theatre and "high art". The theatre represents a central hub both as a venue and as the most famous cultural institution in Glasgow. The theatre has over 60 years experience creating award winning productions launching the careers of some of our best loved actors e.g Rupert Everett!
