  • Need


    The majority of young people excluded from mainstream education suffer from poor personal and social skills, little self-confidence and low aspirations. This leaves them unable to progress in education and employment and adversely impacts their ability to develop positive supportive relationships and lead fulfilling social lives.


    By delivering a 2 half day per week personal and social development programme. One morning is on site with the young people and staff engaging in team challenges, critical thinking exercises, literacy and numeracy based games and role-play activities. The other morning is off site at a local leisure centre with everyone being coached in a particular sport including tennis, boxing, football, squash and touch rugby. The project runs throughout the year.

    Aim 1

    To build and develop young people’s social skills in preparation for adult life


    » Begin the on-site morning with a sit down breakfast.
    » Staff and young people working together to solve different problems and team challenges
    » Engaging in a variety of focus activities
    » Staff and young people play board games together

    Success will be young people returning to mainstream education, pursuing social activities and talking about their future.

    Aim 2

    Improve fitness and encourage healthier lifestyles


    » Coaching in squash, boxing, football, tennis, touch rugby, badminton and rock climbing
    » Staff and young people working together to solve different problems and team challenges

    Success will be young people improving their diets, engaging in regular sport and other active pursuits and structuring their day better including better sleeping patterns

    Aim 3

    To raise young people’s awareness of their own personal qualities and achievements


    » Young people given space and time to engage in a variety of creative and art based activities
    » Young people encouraged to work together with staff on different improvisation and role-play activities.
    » Young people engage in creative writing tasks, share their writing with the group and receive positive praise and encouragement from their peers
    » Young people and staff put in teams and set different practical tasks to complete.

    Success will be an improvement in young people's self esteem and a greater desire to pursue educational, social and employment opportunities.

    Aim 4

    To provide opportunities to explore relationships and respect the views, needs and rights of others


    » Young people and staff engage in role play activities
    » Discussion activities on different subjects
    » Creative writing activities on culturally relevant subjects

    Success will be young people developing deeper friendships with peers and being more willing to accept other people and there differences.

    Aim 5

    To encourage the development of mentoring relationships between young people and FST team members


    » Staff work together with young people on all activities

    Success will be at least 50% of young people developing mentoring relationships with Future Skills staff and volunteers.

  • Impact


    Young people returning to mainstream education and achieving at school, which will hopefully lead to the learners progressing to further education and employment. In addition the young people engaging in sporting and positive social activities in their spare time. This will be demonstrated through the maintaining of the relationships with the young people enabling us to record the successes they have.


    One risk is that the young people will not regularly attend enough for them to benefit from the programme. To combat this we have developed a programme that is hugely varied in terms of activities engaged in and learning styles covered.

    Another risk is the potential for extreme behaviour from the young people. To deal with this we have a high staff and young person ratio and also create a very calm and welcoming environment that the young people flourish in.


    A written report will be posted or emailed on a termly basis, detailing attendance and key achievements of the young people.

  • Background


    The project is based in Wandsworth in South West London. Wandsworth is a diverse borough with some great wealth but also areas which are among the 20 percent most deprived in England. These include Lower Layer Super Output Areas within the wards of Latchmere, Queenstown and Roehampton. Based on the 2001 census Wandsworth’s BME population is over 57,000 from a total population of just over 260,000.


    The young people that attend our Learn2live programme are referred from Wandsworth’s Pupil Referral Unit, with the length of time on the programme dependent on progress. The majority do not engage in any form of sport or exercise and live unhealthy lifestyles. In addition most lack confidence and self-esteem often displaying negative behaviour to gain attention from peers and adults.

    Why Us?

    Combined the team has over 21 years experience of working with disaffected and challenging young people. This has informed our belief that relationship is key to everything we do, and not just building positive, trusting relationships with the young people, but also with parents, carers and other professionals involved in a young persons life. This holistic approach is vital in empowering a young person to grow and develop positively leading to the best possible outcomes for them.
