Protecting the Next Generation (PNG)

To reduce the prevalence of HIV & Aids in Malawi by influencing behavoural change in young children.

The infection rate amongst 5 - 12 year olds is 1%, rising to 14%+ in adults.The project raises awareness in children of the risks enabling them to protect themselves as they develop as adults.

  • Need


    Primarily the high HIV & Aids infection rate amongst adults, which is over 14%. This problem is exacerbated by a fundamental lack of knowledge about the disease (particularly in rural areas); of the major risk factors , and how to self-protect against infection.

    Increased knowledge leads to an increase in the numbers of people being tested, which in turn allows those who test positive to receive treatment and modify their sexual behaviour accordingly. It also reduces stigma in the community.


    By targeting children aged 5 and 12 years old with a educational film which has and is based on themes that are relevant them and the local culture.

    Featuring Malawian children and made in the local dialect. It will be shown in villages and schools and highlights the risks that lead to infection.

    The film is interactive in order to involve the children watching it. We have strong evidence that this will positively influence the childrens behaviour and lead to behavoural change.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    Distribute the film as widely as possible to the target audience in the region of Usisya in Malawi


    » Building the project team and completing the formal project planning. Selecting and training village facilitators to support the project.
    » Raising awareness of the existence of the film within each village, and the scheduled showing to maximise the number of children who see the film.
    » Transporting and showing the film using mobile video equipment in 31 villages, with Temwa support staff and the trained village facilitators.
    » Collating local feedback from each showing to allow us to gauge the impact and understand where the key issues/areas are that require further support.

    What success will look like

    Success will be reaching an audience of 20,000 children located in Temwa's operational area of Usisya within 12 months of the project start date.

    Aim 2

    To identify and partner with other NGO's in Malawi who can leverage the distribution of the film.


    » Identifying qualified partners who are experienced in delivering health related themes as part of their existing operational remit.
    » Communicating the project and its aims to them in a half day workshop. Confirm their suitability as a partner.
    » Training of facilitators and support staff within the selected NGO's to ensure the success of each project.
    » Collecting periodic feedback from each partner NGO to assess the effectiveness and success of their project delivery.

    What success will look like

    Success will be reaching an audience of 80,000 children located in our NGO partners operational areas within 12 months of the project start date.

  • Impact


    This will be achieved by increasing knowledge of the risks.

    This knowledge of the risks that lead to iinfection support self-protection.

    Increased awareness leads to reduced stigma - a serious problem in the community - people are afraid to know their status.

    This in turn increases the numbers of people tested.

    When people know their status, they modify sexual behaviour accordingly

    Modified behaviour will lead to a significant reduction in the numbers of people becoming infected


    The main risk would be for Temwa to take exclusive responsibility for distribution of the film within Malawi.

    We will mitigate this risk by partnering with other local and international organisations to support this task, and maximise the rapid distribution of the film.


    We will produce a monthly report progress against key activities and success criteria.

    A detailed report will be completed after 12 months, incorporating feedback from the local project and from NGO partners with recommendations for the way forward. This will be published on the Temwa website

  • Background


    The projects ultimate goal is to be shown in the whole of Malawi. However this will depend on our ability to recruit strategic partners operating in other regions.

    We will also look to the government too provide support through the national media.

    Temwa operates exclusively in the rural north of the country, and will be directly responsible for distribution of the film within this area.


    The main beneficiaries will be the 5 - 12 year olds who as a result of seeing this film understand the key risks, and adopt effective strategies within their personal lives to protect themselves as they mature.

    The film will also be seen by many adults which will encourage increased testing.

    Finally the issue will have a raised visibility within the community which will promote discussion and debate, generating a positive momentum in accepting and proactivelyy tackling the problem.

    Temwa has an existing operation in Usisya and have been delivering projects there since 2002.

    The film that is at the heart of this project was produced with funds that were raised through the Big Give in 2009
