Navigate Life offers a critical service to individuals and their families in SW Glasgow that can mean the difference between hope and hardship. It offers people dignity, a workspace & tools - both practical & attitudinal - that is often all that is needed to help them get their lives back on track.

South West Glasgow neighbourhoods feature significantly on the Scottish Executive’s Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation 2006 in crime, health, unemployment and addiction. This picture has changed but little in the recently published 2009 SIMD. This is supported by data cited in the Glasgow Centre for Population Health’s Health and Wellbeing Profile for SW Glasgow in February 08. Hospital admissions for drug abuse are 103% above the national average, and 120% above for alcohol abuse.
Our Navigate Life programme works directly with 70 residents from South West Glasgow. The learning environment that Navigate Life creates is particularly welcomed by those who did not find a chance to shine in the classroom setting.
Navigate Life provides wood workshops, emotional nurture and ongoing support. Using traditional crafts as a focus, Navigate Life provides routine and purpose, creating opportunities for meaningful growth. Through purposeful activity people can reclaim their dignity.
Increase 70 people's transferrable skills & facilitate their social & economic contribution to life.
Activities» Deliver 70 SVQ unit qualifications in wood work and compliementary workshop activity that builds transferable skills; team work, H&S awareness etc.
» Offer 20 people a range of volunteering opportunities to give them an opportunity to further their skill development and contribute something back.
Success will be 65 participants passing 3 SVQ units; for about half their first formal qualification. Each year, 12 will progress into a job, 8 into f.e. and 20 into volunteering.
Increase the quality of life and sense of achievement of 70 people from SW Glasgow.
Activities» 60 people will have made an item of furniture or similar to take home or give as gifts as a permanent reminder of what they have achieved.
» 60 people will have completed the programme to be awarded a GalGael ceritificate and a toolkit
» 70 people will have experienced something 'new'; out in our boats, assisting at events and other activities.

70 participants struggling with issues of deprviation will have increased confidence and motivation.
Activities» Weekly excursions to experience our natural and cultural heritage.
» Weekly peer-led open sessions including sharing of skills and food, talks, films and cultural events.
80% of our participants will record feeling more confident and motivated as a result of their participation. Weekly one to one sessions will have supported this progress.
Longer term the project is pioneering a template for renewal that can be adopted by other areas. The project is providing positive role models within the community of people who have made the journey away from negative lifestyles to moving on in life with purpose. We would hope to see a reduction in alcohol admissions locally, along with other related substance abuse statistics.
The risks that affect this project are primarily health and safety and risk of harm to self and others. We have policies and procedures in place to mitigate the risks that these pose. This includes inductions, assessment, control measures and restricted access areas.
We will report to donors through our lively blog which attempts to bring to life what we've been up to on a regular basis. This will be complemented by our annual report. Quarterly reports are produced for our Board and these could be adapted for reporting to donors on progress against project aims

This is supported the Glasgow Centre for Population Health’s Health and Wellbeing Profile for SW Glasgow in February 08. In Ibrox where our workshop premises are situated, the rates of alcohol admission are 300% higher than the Scottish average and South West Glasgow has the third lowest life expectancy in Scotland.
Navigate Life is designed to serve the needs of our most isolated community members; experiencing homelessness, drug addiction alcoholism, previous convictions & mental health issues. Particularly challenging is the reality that many of our participants have multiple needs. These conspire to form enduring barriers to wider life chances. GalGael offers participants a supportive environment to overcome barriers, and equips them with transferable skills and the confidence to access opportunities.
We believe we’re the right people to do this work because we hold fast to our community roots, having been founded by community members experiencing similar issues as our current participants. In that sense, we prefer not to see ourselves as a charity, but more a community within a community, who come together to meet our shared needs.We want to be innovative in exploring and developing ‘cures’, not bogged down with ‘symptoms'.
