Grants for Writers
Provide the writers of the future with the means to attend a 5-day residential writing course at an Arvon creative writing centre led by published professional writers and so improve their professional development opportunities.
January 2011 - December 2011
Charity information: The Arvon Foundation
Many of the writers who wish to attend Arvon and would benefit from the experience are unable to pay the full course fee (in 2011 this is £625) due to financial disadvantage. An Arvon experience is open to all - no qualifications are needed, just an ability to be creative and a desire to write. People from every walk of life and every part of the UK attend Arvon, and many are on a very low wage or no income at all.
By providing grants we can give people a real opportunity to take their writing seriously and to develop their writing skills with the help of professional published authors. We know from our feedback that many of today's established writers started their careers on an Arvon course. Alongside that, many people write for pleasure who will never be published. But they gain the same life skills - improved confidence, ability to express themselves, to be creative.
To give amateur writers the means to develop their writing skills by coming on an Arvon course
Activities» Run a bursary scheme giving applicants up to £370 towards the cost of the course (£625 in 2010).
What success will look like
Success will be 24 disadvantaged adults attending an Arvon course
The project will make an important opportunity available to 25 people who would otherwise miss out. Success will be measured by feedback from the attendees immediately after the course. We will also keep in touch and ask for feedback one year on to see if the course had a lasting impact on their development as a writer.
The risks are that we may give the grants to people not genuinely at a disadvantage or who aren't serious about writing. We will mitigate these by asking every applicant to write to us explaining their situation and commitment to developing as writers.
We will write to donors giving feedback from the applicants after their course and one year on.

Our projects attract people from all over the UK to our residential creative writing centres in the countryside. They are based in Shropshire, Devon and Yorkshire. Each centre has acommodation onsite in shared and single rooms, space to cook and eat together plus plenty of quiet spaces for writing. Different landscapes offer tranquility from everyday life - the pennines in Yorkshire, green pastureland in Devon and a wooded manor in Shropshire.
Writers based all over the UK, aged from 16 years old and upwards, from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Arvon Foundation is the leading provider of residential writing courses and has been for the past 42 years. Each year 2,000 people pass though our doors to be tutored by hundreds of well-known writers, all of whom hold Arvon in esteem as THE place to learn the craft of writing.
