  • Need

A lack of social opportunity and contact for young adults 16+ with severe learning disabilities in their local community. These young people want to enjoy the same range of activities as any other but are not able to due to the extent of their disabilities. As they leave school they spend the majority of time at home with their parents and lose touch with their friends from school. They also often lose their abilities to intereact together in a social situation and become too dependant on family

By providing a varied programme of activities in the local area and wider afield where the young people are supported by experienced and qualified support staff, who encourage and guide them towards a fuller life with their peers. The activities are chosen, with support, by the young people themselves through our Youth Forum and additional ideas are suggested by staff and volunteers to widen their experience and confidence. They are taught life skills handling money and using public transport.

  • Impact

Our project benefits the mental and emotional health of our user group as we work towards developing their confidence and self esteem as individuals and help to show them what they are capable of achieving given the right opportunity. None of these young people are ever going to live a totally independent life but they need the encouragement and opportunity to gain the required skills and competences to reach their full potential.

Our biggest risk is possible lack of funding as this is an expenive project to run due to high support staff needs. Our fundraising strategy is to spread our funding amongst a range of funders so that we are not dependant on one or two.

Through reports, newsletters and our website.

  • Background

We are based in Mid Sussex but the young people access activities and venues throughout sussex and occassionally have trips as far as london.

The young adults all have severe learning disabilities, many with additional behavioural, physical or sensory problems, some with Autism and ADHD, and need a high level of support.

The benefits will also be considerable for their family carers because the young people are learning new skills and competences, and will be more fulfilled and happy in their lives in general which makes for a happier family life!

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Kangaroos have been providing recreational activities for these children and young people in our area for over sixteen years and are confident that we can deliver this project; we know our user group, are engaged with them and can develop services with their full participation.
