Scottish Befriending Scheme

To support families in Scotland who have a member with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Our befriending scheme provides a trained volunteer who spends a few hours each week with a person with autism or Asperger syndrome or one of their family members.

Having a child with an autism spectrum disorder can have a huge impact on family life - even a trip to the shops can be a fraught and intense occasion. It was in response to the many pleas from parents and family members for a reliable and trained respite support that, in 1998, we set up our volunteer Befriending Scheme.
Our Scheme helps relieve parents of some of the pressures that looking after an autistic child inevitably brings. It provides a much needed break for the parents and helps to break the wall of isolation.
