Heart research at the Hatter Cardivascular Institute
The Hatter Cardiovascular Institute was established in 1990, to create a Centre for Academic Cardiology linked to both University College London and UCLH Charity. The "bench to bedside" approach to the research, which allows basic ideas to be translated into clinical practice, underpins the ethos of the research being undertaken.
The team have discovered that the heart has the ability to protect itself from injury by releasing its own prosurvival proteins. They now aim to develop new ways of exploiting this discovery to benefit patients suffering a heart attack or undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery.
