Project information

Echocardiograph Machine

Echocardiograph machines are needed as part of CRY’s screening programme as after an ECG is taken, 5-10% of individuals will require an additional test if any abnormalities are found.

  • Need

Reducing the incidence of young sudden cardiac death

Screen young people for any cardiac condition they may have with an ECG. If there are any abnormalities with their ECG, they will then have their hearts checked with an Echocardiograph machine.

Echocardiograph machines look at the structure of the heart and with information provided on screen, measurements are taken which give a guide to heart muscle thickness and the size of the chambers of the heart.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Identify young people with potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions

» Screen young people, initially with an ECG and then with an Echocardiograph machine if required.

    What success will look like

By looking into the number of young people screened with an Echocardiograph machine and also how many of these were referred onto their GP for further testing.

  • Impact

The long term changes that will be brought about will that more young people will be diagnosed with cardiac conditions. They will then either be treated for their condition or given advice on how to manage it, therefore reducing the risk of a cardiac arrest and the incidence of young sudden cardiac death.

By providing them with information about the number of young people screened with an ECG, the number that were required to have a test with an Echocardiograph Machine and also the number that were referred onto their doctor for further testing.
