  • Need

    Need

Despite a reputation of affluence Chipping Norton has pockets of notable social deprivation, highlighted by growing reliance on the local food bank. Christmas can be difficult for struggling families with children stigmatised by peer-pressure and parents/carers left with feelings of worthlessness at their 'failure' to provide the treats, presents and outings that their children see others enjoying.

The Theatre would like to provide a little fun and magical entertainment for clients of the food

    Solution

Attending the panto would be something special to look forward to and something positive to talk about, reducing social isolation and difference, as well as the chance to enjoy a traditional Christmas activity at no cost to themselves, providing relief in both financial and emotional terms. For some of the families this may not be their first panto, and for them it could be a way of 'normalising' Christmas at a difficult point in their lives; for others it may be an introduction to live theatre.

  • Impact

    Impact

Direct long term changes are not expected from this project; a lighthearted positive cultural experience can help people to escape momentarily from the stresses and strains of daily life and we would hope that the 'glow' from panto would linger over the Christmas period, helping relieve some of the stresses that many people encounter. Indirectly we may see more people taking up subsidised tickets to other events, or bursaries to workshops etc. but this is not a primary aim of the project.

    Risk

Poor take-up - we have discussed this project with the food bank to ensure that tickets are presented positively, as a genuinely altrustic, no strings offer.

    Reporting

Post panto feedback detailing the number of tickets claimed, with anonymous feedback from any recipients happy to share comments with us.
