Transform 500 young lives
Your donation will transform the lives of 500 young people from the North East of England. Together we will provide young people in challenging circumstances with they opportunities they need to realise their potential and discover what they’re truly capable of.
January 2019 - December 2019
Charity information: The Key
Young people in the North East lack access to opportunities. Many don’t believe in themselves and simply aren’t realising, or achieving, their potential. In the North East, deprivation is high and prospects are low. The region has some of the highest levels of poor emotional wellbeing, mental health and young people not in education, employment or training (NEET). Austerity has led to closure and reduced youth provision meaning there are less opportunities to kick start young people's futures.
The Key will provide young people with the opportunities they need to realise their potential and discover what they’re capable of through our youth-led Framework.
The Key Framework inspires young people to believe in their ideas and empower them to take the lead. It sees them come together in small teams and, with support of a trained Key Facilitator (youth worker), use their individuality and imaginations to think, plan, budget, pitch (to panel), do and review their own projects.
Provide young people in challenging circumstances with the opportunities they need and deserve.
Activities» Deliver The Key Framework with 500 young people, empowering them to take the lead and think, plan, do and review 125 of their very own projects.
What success will look like
Young people will have develop their confidence and improved their skills by 21% and made positive steps into education, training, employment and/or volunteering.
The Key helps young people access opportunities previously beyond their reach. It supports them to discover their passions and generate the drive and determination. The Key Framework supports young people to form a growth mindset and lead more successful, sustainable and independent lives in the future.
We demonstrate our impact using the demographic, project & skills data of our young people. Their Key skills wheel data we show their development journey before, during & after engagement.
The main risk to delivering this project is our ability to reach our fundraising target to ensure we can transform 500 young lives.
To mitigate this, we have developed a robust fundraising strategy with diverse income streams and strong relationships with major trusts and corporate foundations. If this does not prove viable we will reduce the levels of activity to ensure we do not over commit expenditure without sufficient income to balance.
The Key will provide a bespoke update to inform donors of the direct impact of their donation. Our updates will include numbers and stories of young people supported, showcasing examples of projects delivered, confidence developed and skills improved.

Our young people have limited and unequal access to opportunities, suffer from a fixed mindsets and often don’t believe in themselves. As a result, they’re not realising their full potential.
The Key has transformed the lives of young people across the North East of England for the last 26 years.
Over the past five years we've supported 13,673 young people to plan 2996 of their very own projects. As a result young people improved their confidence, developed their skills and made 8054 transitions into education, training, employment and/or volunteering. A further 140,000 members of the community also benefited from taking part in young people's projects.
