Sporting Marvels: Reaching Every Rhondda School

We'd like pupils in every Rhondda school to have the opportunity to benefit from Sporting Marvels' activities. We currently partner with 18 of Rhondda's 25 primary schools & 3 of the 5 secondary schools. By academic year 2021/22 we'd like to have our programmes established in every school.

December 2018 - December 2021

  • Need

    Need

Rhondda is one of the most deprived areas of the UK; the closure of all its mines in the 1980s/90s led to high unemployment, and there has been little new investment since. Levels of alcohol and drug misuse are also high. Many young people therefore grow up without positive role models and with very low levels of aspiration in their lives, making poor choices which limit their horizons and make it less likely that they will achieve their potential.

    Solution

Feedback from Head Teachers, teachers, parents & pupils, as well as beginning/end-of-year self-esteem and fitness tests, show that our programmes make a significant difference to the lives of the children we engage with - in terms of increased self-esteem, confidence, fitness, responsibility, engagement with the community & academic achievement. This project will enable ALL Rhondda children to have the opportunity of gaining these benefits

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To extend our primary school partnerships to the remaining 7 schools by the 2021/22 academic year

    Activities

» Recruit and train additional schools workers (Marvels)

    What success will look like

We will be in partnership with each school and have a satisfactory report from the Head Teacher on our workers and programme.

    Aim 2

To have at least 1 schools worker in the 2 remaining secondary schools by the 2021/22 academic year

    Activities

» Recruit and train additional schools workers for primary schools, freeing up senior workers for secondary schools

    What success will look like

We will be in partnership with each school and have a satisfactory report from the Head Teacher on our workers and programme.

  • Impact

    Impact

Continued increases in young people's self-confidence, self-esteem, health & fitness, academic achievement & community involvement. Our area has seen reductions in the no. of young people not in education, employment or training, & an increase in sport participation; while government interventions have certainly helped these figures, the extent of improvement isn't replicated in all Welsh LAs, which could indicate that Sporting Marvels is having an overall positive effect on Rhondda's youth.

    Risk

There is a risk that schools workers could leave the charity; our ongoing two year training programme has been designed to mitigate this risk by taking on 2 or 3 school leavers each year so that new workers are constantly being trained to expand the team and replace any who leave.
There is a risk that we may not attract enough funding to expand as we wish. We are addressing this through grant applications and the setting up of 2 online businesses whose profits go to Sporting Marvels.

    Reporting

We will report to donors each new academic year (September) on how many new schools have joined the programme, and will also share with donors the feedback given by Head Teachers of these schools, when they report back to us at the end of our first term in the school.

  • Background

    Location

    Rhondda Valleys, South Wales, UK

    Beneficiaries

The main beneficiaries will be the children in new partner schools; at primary school level they'll benefit from our relevant & motivational RE/PSE/PE curriculum, & at secondary school level selected pupils will have the chance to join our leadership programme, developing their confidence, self-esteem and leadership capabilities. Secondary schools will benefit from a full-time worker helping with PE/sports activities, & often acting as a trusted link between pupils and staff.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

There is no other charity delivering a similar programme; with 15 years service to Rhondda’s schools, Sporting Marvels is well established and a fully integrated part of the educational, sporting and social culture of Rhondda. Our work is recognised by Head Teachers, parents and the local authority as making a difference to young people's lives, and the positive endorsement and feedback from our current partner schools encourages others to want to partner with us.
