  • Need

It is increasingly important, given the high levels of unemployment amongst young people in Scotland, that young people have an awareness of enterprise combined with the necessary skills & experience to make it an achievable future pathway. With fewer traditional employment avenues & low levels of economic growth, new business start-ups &young people with the skills, experience & confidence to develop them are vitally important to future economic development at a local and national level

Young Enterprise Scotland’s ‘learning by doing’ activities increase young people’s entrepreneurial ability and work-readiness by developing skills and personal strengths in: communication, confidence, problem solving, finance, presenting, leadership, decision-making, creative-thinking, organisation, resilience, initiative and teamwork - all essential skills for running a successful business or doing well whatever their chosen career path.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To Enhance entrepreneurial attitudes of young people in Scotland.

    » Deliver Bridge 2 Business in Scottish colleges - an interactive programme of mentoring & events to inspire, connect & support students into business;

    What success will look like

We will know we have been successful if we
continue to increase the numbers we work with each year & support more young people to improve their enterprise and employability skills

    Aim 2

Improve the enterprise skills of young people in Scotland

» Deliver the Company Programme across Scotland the ultimate, year-long business enterprise experience for S5-S6 school pupils across Scotland.
» Deliver the Tenner and Fiver Challenges across Scotland
» Deliver the Inventors Challenge Project for young people in primary schools

    What success will look like

We will know we have been successful if we support more college students with small business loans

    Aim 3

Strengthen the work readiness of Scotland’s young people

» Deliver the Pathway Programme – a practical, supportive enterprise training course for young people not currently in employment or education
» Deliver the Junior Pathway Programme for young people aged 13-15 who are not successfully engaging with school

    What success will look like

We will know we have been successful if we increase the numbers on our Pathway Programme who go on to positive destinations

  • Impact

The projects will improve the practical and transferable skills for employment for young people in Scotland and will support young people to start up their own successful businesses. We will show the success of our work by monitoring the number of young people who demonstrate an increased skill-set, who achieve qualifications and who go on to set up their own businesses. We will keep in touch with participants, teachers and volunteers throughout the project and beyond to track progress.

There is a risk that key staff members or volunteers move on from the organisation. We have dealt with by ensuring a rigorous business plan is in place to ensure continuity of delivery. As with all voluntary sector organisations, there is also a risk that we do not secure all of the funding required to run our planned activities. To mitigate this, we have a sustainable fundraising strategy in place

Donors to our project will be added to our quarterly email update list and will receive regular updates on the ongoing and forthcoming activities of Young Enterprise Scotland.
