Holistic Library Project at Kigoma,Tanzania

Read International intend to improve the quality of education at Mwananchi secondary school through; Ensuring access to education resources, improving of teachers professional development through in service training and empowering students through building their capacity on literacy reading.

    Need

    Tanzania education is experiencing different challenges, we are trying to solve the following; Education resources scarcity, our schools lacks reading and teaching materials which hinder learning.
    Reading challenge, there are some of schools where a grade 7 students can't read a grade 2 story, this hinder their learning progress.
    Teaching gap;Big number of teachers lacks on going training that improves teaching, they lack advanced teaching methodologies, struggling on doing learning assessment

    Solution

    On education resources; we will provide education resources through creating a full furnished well arranged library equipped with learning and teaching resources.
    On reading challenge; We empower students on reading for learning and for fun through formulation of the functional reading clubs in schools. We also train them on library management.
    On teaching gap; We impart teachers with pedagogical skills, communicative language and on conducting learning assessment to support students learning.

    Aim 1

    Improve access to education resources in schools we support, here specific at Mwananchi secondary


    Activities

    » Creating a library. We will do the refurbishment of the available unused room at Mwananchi school. The room will be repainted, flooring and re Roofed
    » We will buy books & equip in the library; Furniture; tables, chairs & comfy Conner will be created and fill the shelves with books (text & fiction).

    What success will look like

    Library photos will be provided and they will be for before and after refurbishment. Book purchasing invoices and receipts will be provided and books photos will be shared.


    Aim 2

    Empower students with literacy reading and learning skills to improve their future.


    Activities

    » We will formulate school based reading club. This club will have members who are students whom will act as a reading champions in this school
    » We will do orientation to students (members of club) on leadership and management of the reading club
    » We will do training on reading components with emphasis on Fluency, Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary. Thorough capacity building will be done.
    » There will be reading competition and learning visits that will be made through this aim. Students will compete with others on different themes.

    What success will look like

    There will be photos for the club members during session, videos will be shared and compiled annual attendance lists will be provided when required.


    Aim 3

    Teachers In service training. We expect through library project, teachers will benefit its use.


    Activities

    » We will conduct a thorough training on pedagogical skills, assessment and communicative language. Teacher will start applying advanced methodologies
    » We will conduct exposure experience sharing visit. Teachers from Kigoma will visit schools in Dar es Salaam to learn on the use of the skills gained.

    What success will look like

    Teachers training session photos and Videos within their school premise. Teachers exposure experience sharing visits bus tickets, and the photos together with their counter parts.


  • Impact

    Impact

    Availability of quite space where students and teachers can acquire knowledge and skills for life.

    Presence of the generation which is self independent. This is due to the empowerment interventions that has led to students becoming independent readers. Students developed their self efficacy. Students increased their reading habit but also students increased their self confidence.

    We will have committed and professional up to date teachers to support students learning mileage.

    Risk

    Political statement VS circulars; Political leaders sometimes use to announce things that contradict with circulars improvement.
    1. we engage and involve Government in our Project Cycle Management phases/steps.
    2. We sign memorandum of understanding with Local Government Authority to stick to our agreement, no unnecessary changes in between of the implementation. 3. We are part of approved Government education platform where we update ourselves on any changes and we discuss how to go about

    Reporting

    Donor is provided with a report immediately if there will be any risk that might hinder the progress of the project. We keep donor up to date through emails and reports.
    We also invite donors to visit the project and have the direct discussion from the field, and draw solutions where needed

    Location

    The Holistic Library Project will be done at Mwananchi secondary school, in Kigoma Region, Tanzania.

    Beneficiaries

    Primary beneficiaries are; Students and teachers while secondary beneficiaries will be other school community members like administrators and office attendants.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

    Read International is experienced in this field for more than 12 years now. We were doing Book Project only in 2005, in 2008 started creating Libraries in secondary schools. In 2015 we initiated teachers professional development and resource use and on the same year we introduced our Literacy program for students empowerment. To date we have refurbished 112 libraries, formulated 52 reading clubs reaching 2340 students through clubs & 60,039 through other programs, 782 teachers empowered.

    Local Government Education department officials do the direct supervision and monitoring of the project. These are District & Ward Education Officers

    These will be direct implementer as well under the supervision of Education Officers under with Read International Program Manager guidance
