Our mission is to demonstrate that
social and economic disadvantage
need not result in educational
disadvantage. all children - even
the disadvantaged - can be taught
to read. We don’t doom any child to
educational failure.

  • Need

Our vision is THE RIGHT TO READ THE RIGHT TO KNOW. Disadvantage, like advantage, is sustained by educational inequality. No child, of any background, should be educationally doomed. Children - no matter how many ‘disadvantage’ labels they attract - can be taught - swiftly, animatedly and gratifyingly - to read. We must embed and spread the measures we effectively take to eliminate the disadvantages suffered by the literacy needy children.

We target literacy-needy children from the most challenging backgrounds. And we teach them, speedily and enjoyably, to read in our ordered classes which are structured and fast-paced. By using the Butterfly programme we make sure that they quickly become independent readers of ‘chapter books’ – which they love. The programme is a pacey, scripted synthetic phonics course designed to ensure children improve their reading fluency, grammar and comprehension offering a way into critical thinking.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To eliminate the disadvantage suffered by the literacy needy.

» Children flock to us through word of mouth. We pre-test each child. place them in classes based on their reading levels and teach them to read.

    What success will look like

We pre-test each child, place them in a class according to their reading age, teach using the Butterfly method and then post test after 20 hours of teaching and calculate progress.

  • Impact

The long term changes are reflected in a child's progress in reading which dramatically transform the lives of children from disadvantaged communities. Every child
    - even from the most deprived or
    difficult family, the most challenging
neighbourhood, or just on the brink
of speaking English - is entitled to the
    knowledge that comes from subject
teaching. And this paves the way for these results last them a lifetime. We have known our children to attend university.

There are no known risks in this programme, for the last twenty years we have taught 4000+ children to read with consistent results. We may sometimes face an issue with space but work efficiently to find alternate teaching venues and continue delivering our programme.

By way of report based on the requirement and by publishing an annual impact report.

  • Background

    The Learning Store
Real Action’s home and centre of operations. We are strategically placed on Mozart Street, at the heart of the extremely deprived section of north Westminster which the charity was originally created to serve.

The Mozart Estate continues to have the highest level of child deprivation in the country. We now have three Butterfly Saturday Reading Schools, serving disadvantaged communities that span the west London zone.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Our 400+ 4-12 year-old London deprived Butterfly pupils will enjoy an average one-year upsurge in their reading ages in just 20 hours of our animated teaching. Our Impact studies tell us those labelled as disadvantaged will do as well as, or outperform, their more advantaged friends. Our Butterfly grammar and comprehension teaching, under ongoing development, will provide them with the foundations of English subject mastery and the means to gain knowledge. Its our effective method!
