Fuel Poverty

The Foundation is raising funds to support 800 families facing fuel poverty. Winter is when choices often have to be made between cooking food or heating. Those who are particularly vulnerable are older people and families with young children.
Each £25 grant will transform a family's Christmas.

  • Need


    There are over 8,000 people in Wakefield on pre-payment meters; these represent the poorest in society and yet are charged 25% more than those with fuel accounts. This project is designed to support the needs of those who, for whatever reason find themselves, with insufficient funds to cover their basic living needs.

    We are conscious that Universal Credit is due to be rolled out in Wakefield in November and this is likely to result in even greater need.

    We aim to act now to meet this need.


    By providing funds to enable payments to be made that ensure heating can be maintained and food cooked.

    With matched funding a donation of £25 will help two local families this Christmas.

    We are working with Wakefield Council Welfare Team who have operating procedures in place to provide this support direct to individual households. This ensures that funds raised by the Community Foundation follow the necessary checks to ensure that all claims are valid and from those in demonstrable need

    To provide emergency payments to those who are unable to heat their homes or cook their food.

    What success will look like

    By achieving or exceeding the £20k target that has been established. This is twice the figure achieved in 2017/18.

  • Impact


    There is a continuing need for this type of support; demand is growing as universal benefit is rolled out and there are delays in making benefit payments. Family break-up, loss of employment and difficulties with housing all contribute to the continuing need for this kind of support.


    There is a growing belief throughout the district that those who have, should support those in need. The Community Foundation in Wakefield was established ten years ago for exactly this purpose. In 2017/18 the Foundation raised £9,000, and the participating parties have agreed that their target for 2018/19 should be £20k which has resulted in this application.


    Regular e-newsletters, through social media and directly to individual donors. Again this is something that the Foundation does as a matter of course and has over 1,000 contacts throughout the district who have previously benefited their their support.

  • Background


    Throughout the Wakefield Metropolitan District - current population 327,000. The district suffered enormously from the loss of the mining industry in 1984, but in recent years has bounced back with growing employment and improving performance at many levels. Inward investment continues to grow and with its excellent road, rail and air links it continues to perform strongly.


    Those identified who are suffering from Fuel Poverty. The assessment of applications is carried out by the Welfare Team at Wakefield Council who are in close touch with the DWP. This team was established to support those in need across the district and with their experience in providing this support as the ideal partner to ensure that funds are given to the most needy.

    Why Us?

    The Foundation was established in 2008 with the specific purpose of raising funds to support those in need. Fuel Poverty was identified as a growing problem in the district and hence who this funding programme was introduced on a trial basis in 2017/18.
