Families, not orphanages

Across the world 8 million children are in orphanages when nearly 80% have families. We want to work with an orphanage in Uganda to provide training to safely place children into families and repurpose it into a service to support children in families.

  • Need

In Uganda today there are over 50,000 children living in orphanages. Orphanages have been proven to do irreversible damage to children’s social, emotional, physical and mental development.

There is no such thing as a good orphanage.

As many as 80% of children living in orphanages have family. Often poverty leads parents to give up their children to an orphanage to access education and medical care in the promise of a better life but children need families to thrive.

We want to show orphanages can be part of the solution. Families, not orphanages will work with an orphanage with 50 children and support them with technical expertise to safely place children into families and repurpose into a community service to support the children in orphanages. We will use this to show other orphanages how they can be part of the solution and realise a vision of every children growing up loved in a family.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Provide technical expertise to support the transition of 50 children into families.

» Provide training and mentoring to social workers to conduct child and family assessments and placement
» Provide supervision and technical support to children placed into families

    What success will look like

Children will be safely placed into families and ongoing post placement support.

    Aim 2

Support the orphanage to repurpose into a service to support children in families

» Support with a community assessment to understand needs of the community
» Support the orphanage to repurpose infrastructure into a community service.

    What success will look like

The orphanage will change it's model to residential care to community care.

  • Impact

Besides the emotional, psychological and physical harm of orphanages the cost to keep children in residential care settings is expensive compared to keeping children in families and communities.
By orphanages repurposing into services to support children in families the same investment to support 50 children in an orphanage can support over 500 children in families.
Our monitoring and evaluation show the outcomes for children and the cost of inaction.

The work we are doing involves changing the way stakeholders care and we've learnt from working with over 100 orphanages that engagement is essential and it take time.
It's critical to communicate and get buy-in from donors, orphanage managers, families, the Government and the social workers before we undertake any work.
To mitigate this risk we will begin engagement 3 months before the project commences.

We will send quarterly impact reports to show the progress of the project and produce a film to show the impact of the individual children's lives.

  • Background

Tororo District in Uganda, East Africa on the border of Kenya.

Directly 50 children and their families will benefit.
We hope that this orphanage will catalyse other orphanages to change the way they care and impact hundreds more children in the region.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Child's i Foundation have been working in Uganda pioneering this work for nearly ten years. We ran a transitional centre for up to 25 children and closed it down after piloting foster care as an alternative to placing children into residential care.
We've worked with over 150 orphanages to improve their care but the biggest lesson we learnt is you cannot improve orphanages, the only solution is to repurpose them to enable children to grow up in families.
