Classical Opera's pioneering MOZART 250 project charts Mozart’s life, works and influences up until his death in 1791. In 2019 we celebrate the year 1769 with a programme of concerts, operas, talks, schools projects and high-profile performance & training opportunities for outstanding young artists.

  • Need


    Classical Opera's pioneering MOZART 250 project provides an accessible introduction to classical music. In experiencing our world-class performances and recordings our audiences will find enjoyment in Mozart’s music and discover previously unknown works. Our work with young artists will help launch the careers of the next generation of opera stars. By introducing children to classical music (and opera) at a young age, we hope to demonstrate that it is an exciting, relevant and vibrant art form.


    MOZART 250 presents a rare opportunity to tell the story of Mozart and his contemporaries (including Haydn and J.C. Bach) through performances, recordings, our website and outreach work, breathing new life into their music by exploring the context in which it was composed and premièred. We hope that this far-reaching project will act as a stepping stone to a lasting appreciation of classical music for audiences of all ages, including those who do not currently access or enjoy classical music.

    Aim 1

    To present an exciting retrospective of 1769, the fifth year of our ambitious MOZART 250 project.


    » Present '1769: A Year in Music' to audiences at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre in Jan 2019. The concert includes works by Mozart and Haydn.
    » Present the UK première of Hasses' opera, Piramo e Tisbe, at Cadogan Hall in March 2019. This opera is our dedicated Young Artist Project for 2019.
    » Present new staged productions of two enchanting one-act Gluck operas, Bauci e Filemone and Orfeo, at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank in May 2019.
    » In 2019, we plan to record La Betulia liberata, the seventh disc in our Complete Mozart Opera Cycle, for release on Signum Classics in 2020.

    Aim 2

    Engage and inspire 120 children and their teachers in a MOZART 250 schools project in London.


    » Project INSET: In January 2019, our project team will give teachers a detailed overview of the project and take them through some simple exercises.
    » 120 children will participate in 5 music workshops at their schools led by our animateurs and 3 musicians from our period instrument orchestra.
    » Inspiration Day: The children will take part in a treasure hunt around the 18th-century section of the European Galleries at the V&A.
    » Final performance: The children spend a full day in the theatre, rehearsing and trying their costumes on before performing their operas to audiences.

    What success will look like

    Through a series of workshops with our musicians, children learn about Mozart’s music, devise their own plots and texts, compose their own music and finally perform their operas.

  • Impact


    Through MOZART 250 we will: engage existing and new audiences in an enriching musical experience, deepening their understanding of celebrated & previously unknown Classical repertoire; provide dedicating training and support for outstanding young artists building their profiles and improving their career prospects and credentials; help teachers to acquire new skills to deliver high quality music-led activities; build strong, lasting and mutually beneficial relationships with our venue partners.


    The primary risk to these projects is lack of funding. However, we have solid finance management procedures in place and are confident that we can fund these projects through a variety of income streams including grants and donations. A second risk is venues cancelling performance dates. However, we have contracts with our venue partners and we are insured in the event of a cancellation. Occasionally singers and players pull out - our artists are contracted to prevent this from happening.


    Our donors receive thank you letters, regular news and updates on MOZART 250 through the year, and invitations to join us at performances, rehearsals and behind-the-scenes events. In addition, trusts and major donors receive a full evaluation report at the end of their respective grant periods.

  • Background


    We return to Southbank Centre (Queen Elizabeth Hall) for '1769 – A Year in Music' and our new productions of Gluck’s operas, Bauci e Filemone and Orfeo. Our Young Artist Project will take place at Cadogan Hall. We will deliver education projects in London in partnership with Ealing Music Service. We will record Mozart’s La Betulia Liberata in St John’s Smith Square, London.


    - Concert goers of all ages and backgrounds - young people in particular will benefit from special ticket prices for under-36s
    - The young artists who we support will benefit from coaching, mentoring and performance opportunities
    - Primary school children and their teachers who will take part in our education projects
    - Partner venues who will have the potential to bring in new audiences through leveraging Classical Opera's support base
