Unlocking Potential With Technology

We want to enable every one of our pupils and young people to have access to Eyegaze technology. Using eye movement alone, young people with complex physical needs and limited communication will be able to use computers, unlocking their potential to learn and interact with the world around them.

  • Need

Every young person we support has complex physical needs. All use wheelchairs at least some of the time, struggle with fine motor skills like controlling a computer mouse and have limited verbal communication. These challenges can be extremely frustrating and isolating.

With ‘Eyegaze’ technology, young people can use eye movement to control a computer screen, helping them to learn and communicate. However, we don’t currently have enough to meet the needs of all our young people.

Providing Eyegaze computers in all our classrooms and residential bungalows will open up a world of opportunities for our young people, enabling them to take control of their computer screen using eye movement alone.

With this empowering resource, they will be able to do anything that could usually be done by controlling a mouse and much more. This could include using online learning activities, sending a text message or even controlling a TV remote control.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To enable all children who would benefit from Eyegaze technology to have access to it

» We will install Eyegaze technology in every residential bungalow and in all classrooms (20 in total)

    What success will look like

We will measure the number of children and young people that use Eyegaze, and the number of occasions that Eyegaze is used over all.

    Aim 2

Help our young people develop their education and communicate.

» Our teaching staff will incorporate, where appropriate, the use of Eyegaze into each pupil’s bespoke curriculum.

    What success will look like

Our teaching staff will measure each young person’s progress, particularly through use of educational and communication software.

    Aim 3

Help our young people make choices

» Care staff supporting young people who use our residential services will facilitate the use of Eyegaze when young people wish to use it.
» Teaching staff will facilitate the use of Eyegaze when pupils wish to use it for educational activities.

    What success will look like

We will gather case studies and feedback from care and teaching staff regarding the use of Eyegaze and its impact on young people.

  • Impact

In the long term, Eyegaze enables young people to feel empowered. We expect to see an increase in their emotional wellbeing as a result of being able to make choices, such as turning up the volume of a song that they like.

For our school pupils, we will see a progress in their learning, which will be shown in their annual progress reports.

We will be able to demonstrate the success of Eyegaze through individual case studies provided by teachers and care staff.

There is the risk of the technology being damaged if not handled with care. However, all young people use the technology with support from staff, such as teachers, teaching assistants and care workers.

Furthermore, there is the risk that technical problems could lead to some computers remaining unused.

However, for both of these issues, we have an Assistive Technologist as well as an on-site IT department who are able to deal with any concerns that might arise.

All donors who wish to receive updates receive 3 printed newsletters per year and monthly email updates. For those funding significant funds, such as £500 or more, we will invite them to visit our site and learn more about the project.

  • Background

Chailey Heritage Foundation is located in a rural area of East Sussex. Our day pupils are located across nearby towns including Tunbridge Wells, Brighton and Worthing, and travel daily to access the specialist education that they need.

Our residential services are accessed by children from further afield, mainly from counties across the South East.

Although in a rural location in Sussex, we have a national reputation for our pioneering work with young people living with complex needs.

All of the young people that we support have complex physical and health needs. We currently have 95 pupils in our school from age 3 to 19. We also have 60 young people up to the age of 25 who access our residential services, including both those who live with us full-time and those who visit for short respite breaks.
