Care for a Caravan

The Family Holiday Association owns caravans located at holiday parks around the UK coast. They help deliver vital breaks for families struggling with some of life's toughest challenges. Our Care for a Caravan campaign aims to fund the upkeep of two caravans for 2019, delivering 90+ vital breaks.

    Need

    The children and families we support are those struggling with some of the toughest challenges life can bring. Many are dealing with issues such as severe and sudden illness, bereavement, disability and mental health and abuse.

    Almost 5 million children in the UK live in families who cannot afford a simple break away from home. They miss out on the many positive benefits that spending time together away from the daily grind can bring.

    Solution

    When we bought our first caravan in 2002, it was a way of ensuring we could provide breaks for struggling families during the peak school holiday periods. We now own 16 caravans, located at seaside holiday parks around Britain, and are a vital part of our service. Between them they provide hundreds of families every year with a much needed and often life-changing break away from home.

    It costs around £10,000 each year to fully fund a caravan, including running costs, maintenance and repairs.

    What success will look like

    Two caravans will cater for around 90 low income families from around the country with a 3-4 night break, giving vital respite from their daily struggles.


  • Impact

    Impact

    Our 40+ years of experience, supported by a growing body of academic research, shows that spending quality time together as a family results in stronger, healthier and happier families and communities. It can lead to an improvement in a child's school attendance, behaviour and attainment, whilst adults are better engaged with agencies including further education and employment. As much as anything, it helps families to bond and create precious, happy memories to help sustain them in the future.

    Risk

    We support families who would not be able to get a break without our help. Without us, they would miss out on the benefit of getting some vital respite from their daily struggles with many compound implications on the welfare of the family and community relationships.

    Many of the families we help have never had a break away together. Yet the benefits can be profound.

    Because a little sunshine goes a long way.

    Reporting

    The charity produces an annual report, summarising income and activity that is made available to all supporters in print and digital formats.

    All donors are thanked by email or letter, depending on their stated preferences.

    Location

    The Family Holiday Association works throughout the UK. Applications for funding that meet our criteria are accepted and allocated on a first come basis up to our funding capability in any given year.

    The caravans we own are located in Ayrshire, Clwyd, Devon, East Sussex, Gwyneed, Hampshire, Lincolnshire, North Yorkshire and Somerset.

    Beneficiaries

    The charity works to support low income families in the UK - defined as children under the age of 16 and their carers - who have not been on holiday together within the last four years and will not be able to access a break without our help.

    Each family is referred to us by someone already working with them in a supporting role, such as a teacher, social worker or another charity. This helps ensure that the funds we raise help the families who will benefit the most.

    The Family Holiday Association was founded in 1975 on the principle that holidays are important and make a real difference to the social cohesion of families and the wider community. 40+ years later we remain the only national charity dedicated to helping disadvantaged children and their families access a much-needed and often life changing break.
