  • Need

    Need

Physical activity is included in the recovery package by NHS England however, only 23% people living with cancer meet the recommended levels. This can be due to barriers such as inaccessibility, fear and a lack of knowledge or know how. Research shows that for some cancers, physical activity can improve survival rates and reduce the risk of the disease recurrence. Ongoing monitoring of the needs of our beneficiaries currently shows that 72% require physical activity support from the charity.

    Solution

Each Meet & Move will champion physical activity in a supportive environment. They will address our beneficiaries social and practical support needs by reducing social isolation and providing opportunities to connect with others and be supported amongst peers. Introducing participants to our support programmes and focusing on physical activity will give them the opportunity to move more and help them reap the many physical and psychological benefits of getting active.

    Risk

There is a risk around take up, however we will ensure we have a sufficient lead time and full promotional plan in place that enlists the support of charities, healthcare professionals and local networks to help us promote the event.
There is a risk that one or some of the expert facilitators could pull out the day. We have begun building good relationships with charities and experts in the areas that Meet & Move will be hosted, to ensure we are best placed to replace any late drop outs.

    Reporting

Donors of the project will be thanked before and after the event on our website. They will each receive an email presentation linking to our evaluation report of the project detailing the key successes, adaptations that have been made to the project and forthcoming activities that they can support.

  • Background

    Location

Locations have been identified as larger concentration areas of beneficiaries requiring support, good links with key healthcare professionals and other local large and small charities, in addition to addressing areas that are neglected by current service provision. Lead cancer centres exist nearby, making them ideal locations for regional Meet & Moves. Bursaries will allow those treated in local district general hospitals or living in hard to reach areas, access to our services.

    Beneficiaries

34 young adults are diagnosed every day with cancer in their 20s & 30s. Too old for ‘official’ teenage and young adult care, but with mainstream cancer support services catering for an older demographic, many end up feeling isolated, ignored and unsupported at this pivotal life stage. Meet & Move will have 150 places for those living through and beyond cancer - all cancer types and all stages, across 3 regional locations in England & Scotland. We will also welcome healthcare professionals.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

When cancer stops you in your tracks, Trekstock is there to ensure you don't face it alone. Working with young adults in their 20s & 30s living with and through the late affects of cancer, we have gained great insight into the needs of our beneficiaries and ways they want to be supported. We respond proactively to feedback given through focus groups and monitoring, and have worked hard to develop needs led programmes that have shown to help get young adults moving again after cancer.
