SIMBODIES® - clinical patient simulation equipment

The SIMBODIES® clinical patient simulation system will help save lives by enabling our Critical Care Paramedics further develop their specialist skills. The system uses true to life manikins which react just as a person would when they are seriously injured or experiencing trauma.

  • Need

In our new airbase we have created an interactive, immersive environment that feels 'real', where surfaces respond to touch and sounds, smells and props provide a powerful hands on learning and training experience. Currently, our paramedics train using simple, standard resuscitation manikins which don't provide realistic representations of patients with life threatening conditions.

SIMBODIES® are realistic human patient simulators which will enable our clinical team to perform invasive and complex procedures such as airway management. Along with other simulation makeup and props, SIMBODIES® will provide real life training scenarios for our crews who must respond to the most time critical and life threatening emergencies with confidence. The system will give them the opportunity to interact with a 'true to life' patient to perform advanced clinical care and treatment.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Provide the best in patient care & trauma treatment to improve every patient's chances of survival

» Train our paramedics using the SIMBODIES® equipment so they can carry out advanced treatments to the highest clinical standards.

    What success will look like

By using the SIMBODIES® equipment, our paramedics will be able transfer the advanced skills they learn into real life air ambulance operations. This will help to save lives.

  • Impact

Using realistic, human simulators to create accurate and challenging scenarios will improve the quality of training for our paramedics. It will also enable new team members to gain knowledge, skills and attitudes safely and efficiently. The clinical procedures, communication, leadership and team working skills learned, can all be measured. We will also share this learning with the wider ambulance service which will all have a positive impact on clinical care and survival rates for patients.

Not raising enough funds from the this Challenge will mean that we will have to go out to other funders and this will all take time. Clinical training using simulation equipment also requires motivation from the people taking part, so a structured programme of simulation based training, and opportunities for reviewing practice with the support of our base doctor and simulation experts will ensure that we use this equipment to its fullest potential

We will report the progress of the project to donors either by post or email depending on their preferences. We will also use social and traditional media to report on the project.

  • Background

Wiltshire Air Ambulance serves the whole of Wiltshire and neighbouring counties. On 9 May 2018, we moved to a new operational HQ is at Semington, near Melksham. This is home to both our crew and charity team and includes a state-of-the-art training facility for our paramedics and crew.

Patients will benefit from receiving gold standards of clinical care from highly trained paramedics as a result of our team being able to use this equipment, which will give them the opportunity to gain knowledge, skills and practice clinical procedures and time critical treatments in a safe environment. As our paramedics are lead clinicians within the ambulance service, they will also be able provide clinical leadership and support to crews within the wider ambulance service as a result.
