Kathy's Centre Kindergarten, Uganda

Give disadvantaged children aged 3-6 a better start in life at our ground-breaking early years education facility. This project will give 10 vulnerable infants, including AIDS orphans and marginalised children of adolescent mothers, a year's free education, nutrition & health checks.

  • Need


    In rural Uganda, 20% of people are living in extreme poverty, surviving on less than £1 a day. This results in a lack of education & opportunity for the youth. Children in Uganda have less than 6 years total schooling, causing ill-health, inequality and lack of options, allowing poverty to persist. Poverty, gender bias, and teenage marriage and/or pregnancy are factors that all contribute to just 40% of girls attending primary school, and only 15% completing their secondary education.


    Kathy’s Kindergarten gives young children the best possible start in life through a first-class early education, helping to ensure they stay in education, improving future poverty rates. We provide children with a strong foundation for future learning and the opportunity to increase the average years total schooling, improving economic prospects and developing a more stable, and sustainable future for their communities.

    Aim 1

    To provide 10 disadvantaged children (3-6 years) with a first-class early education.


    » We provide a safe, secure, purpose-built indoor & outdoor learning space fully equipped to offer children open-ended learning opportunities.
    » 4 qualified teachers committed to providing stimulating learning opportunities to engage with each individual child. Guidance from UK EYFS specialist
    » We build partnerships with parents/carers to ensure we give each child a strong foundation for future learning and, with that, deserved opportunities

    What success will look like

    Children will have high rates of attendance; improved attention spans, social skills & educational outcomes at kindergarten and go on to attend primary school.

    To promote a healthy lifestyle and a sense of responsibility for the environment for each child.


    » Children are provided with water and porridge on a daily basis.
    » Children are educated on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and how to take care of the environment & themselves for proper growth and development.
    » We provide ecosan toilets, toothpaste, toothbrush, soap & wash facilities to ensure children learn how to keep themselves clean.
    » We provide regular health checks and have access to ad hoc support from a local health centre.

    What success will look like

    Children demonstrate an understanding of how to take care of their environment, keep safe and healthy and practice good habits.

  • Impact


    Education plays a vital role in lifting the population from poverty. The first 5 years of a child's life are the most critical to their development. Children who attend kindergarten will be ready to learn and thrive at primary & go onto secondary school. Children with an education are more likely to access their own income, educate their own children and take care of their health.


    Lack of trust due to: 1. Experience of endemic corruption: local leaders are mobilised, engaged & supportive of Kathy's Centre which is well established within the community. Teachers live in the locality. 2. Lack of understanding: Kindergarten has operated for 1 year and existing parents speak highly of it.
    Abuse of admission policy - staff have 16 years’ experience in identifying beneficiaries of our projects.
    Lack of attendance: good track record due to parental engagement/support


    Termly updates on the children's progress with photographs, plus end of year assessment results.

  • Background


    This project is located in the rural district of Mayuge, Uganda where incidence of poverty remains chronically high. 74% of the population rely on subsistence farming. Due to gender inequalities women & girls constitute most of the rural poor. The population of Mayuge is 52% female. Mayuge is a recently established district with a lack of basic services; when coupled with a fast-growing population (60% below 19 years), this creates an environment conducive to poverty & deprivation


    Some of the most vulnerable & marginalised young children (aged 3-6) in the community: AIDS orphans, children with HIV/AIDS & children of adolescent mothers. Mayuge has one of the highest rates of HIV in Uganda. Each year, 30% of births in rural Uganda are to girls under 19. In Mayuge, 6% of girls aged 12-17 have given birth. Affected by extreme poverty, unemployment, stigma, gender inequality, lack of education and family support these young mothers are unable to send their children to school.
