School toilet block with dedicated girls' cubicles

Extra Mile is building four new classrooms and a toilet block with dedicated girls' cubicles to provide privacy for their menstruation routines. Most schools have no toilets, and pupils 'go' wherever they can find a suitable place, often where other children play, thereby spreading infection.

  • Need

    Our existing, limited, toilet facilities mean that toilets are shared, denying girls their privacy during periods. Over the last two years we have become troubled by the effects of this problem with girls regularly absenting themselves from class during menstruation leading to academic underachievement. Furthermore we are deeply concerned about their vulnerability to abduction as they are neither able to go home nor to school and hide out in the village, becoming easy targets for traffickers.

    Within the new toilet block there will be several dedicated cubicles built to provide both the normal toilet facilities but also supplies of sanitary pads and pants to hold them in position. Additional classes will be held for each year group, to educate them about how to use the toilets as well as these extra facilities. There will be instructions printed on posters displayed on the walls as well as encouraging 'quotes' which will help restore much needed dignity to these 'mothers' of tomorrow

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    Reduce the number of girls who drop out of school as soon as they begin to menstruate.

    » Educate the girls and their parents/guardians that education is more important than marraige at this age as well as the risk from traffickers.
    » Try to discourage such decisions by including warnings and consequences within the special classes held during each school year.

    What success will look like

    Check each year that the number of girls who have dropped out of school due to early pregnancy has reduced.

    Aim 2

    Reduce absenteeism in the school and raise academic achievement, especially for our girls.

    » Provide a private, 'safe', environment for normal toilet use but especially for hygeinic procedures during girls' periods.
    » Provide the environment for girls not to be teased nor to feel shameful about this natural process and to ensure dignity in the way they are treated.
    » Display posters with encouraging slogans inside the toilets to raise morale and self-confidence.
    » Provide receptacles and supplies of sanitary pads, including re-usable/washable types and also pants inside the cubicles.

    What success will look like

    Check each year that girl's absenteeism has been reduced and that test results reflect an improvement in academic achievement.

    Aim 3

    Increase the level of understanding for both boys and girls and parents/guardians about the risks.

    » Hold special classes early in every school year to educate about personal hygeine, the use of toilets and menstruation.
    » Display posters outlining safe, hygeinic routines when using the toilets and for menstruation.

    What success will look like

    Speak with and listen to pupils to discover an increasingly mature and content understanding of the risks to their education and their lives.

  • Impact

    Greater academic achievement by girls at the school;
    Increasing maturity of both boys and girls in these matters;
    Greater understanding by both parents and guardians of the risks to education and lives if such issues are not dealt with seriously;
    Happier and more 'complete' pupils at school and 'lights' for Sierra Leone to show others the way as future citizens in a very 'raw' republic.

    The success of the project would be undermined if we were not able to raise the necessary finance to cover the cost of the building.
    Also, if we could not afford to provide the facilities within each cubicle the project would be much less effective.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

    Extra Mile opened this secondary school to 50 pupils in September 2016, having been working in Sierra Leone for almost ten years. In that time it has brought over 50 volunteer teachers from all over the world to teach and mentor local teachers and has carried out teacher training workshops in almost every one of those years. Its school acts as a 'beacon' of good practice and is led by a team of responsible local staff and trustees of the highest professional standing, working back in the UK.
