Amber Team Leader - Transforming young lives

More than 83,000 young people experience homelessness each year. We provide a safe place to live and 1-2-1 support through our Team Leaders, to help individuals address any issues from their troubled pasts with the aim of helping them into employment and sustainable accommodation.

  • Need


    We address the complex needs of homeless and unemployed young people, many of whom will be leaving care or prison services and will have experienced problems such as drug and alcohol misuse, mental health issues and low academic achievement. The combination of poor qualifications and high support needs often makes it difficult for homeless young people to find work. Hence, there is a strong correlation between homelessness and unemployment that we aim to address.


    Amber provides homeless young people with a safe place to live but it is the work that Team Leaders do with the residents that really helps them move-on to employment & their own accommodation. The Team Leaders run the Amber programme of support, which focusses on enhancing their confidence & well-being, developing new skills through training & work experience and helping the young people experience new things. With this support, the young people can transform their lives & move on positively.

    Aim 1

    Health & wellbeing - To improve resident’s physical and mental health


    » All residents registered with local GP and provided with any immediate medical treatment required.
    » Residents will be connected into support services to address any drug and alcohol issues they may be facing.
    » Each resident will be offered 12 weeks of counselling with an on-site counsellor.
    » Residents will go on treks and expeditions, have access to our gym & participation in team sports in the community.

    What success will look like

    All residents will have improved physical and mental health, accessing appropriate services such as the GP, counselling, drug & alcohol services etc.

    Aim 2

    Employability - Address any barriers to employment & secure stable employment.


    » Accredited training qualifications delivered by Team Leaders on numeracy, literacy, ICT and other key skills.
    » Access to vocational training courses in industries like construction, motoring etc.
    » Opportunities to gain work experiences with local companies.
    » CV writing and preparing for interviews workshop will be delivered to every resident through partnerships with local businesses.

    What success will look like

    All residents will have enhanced skills work gained work experience with 40% going into long-term sustainable employment or training for employment.

    Aim 3

    Independent living - residents to learn the necessary skills to take responsibility for themselves.


    » Each resident will take responsibility for cleaning and general repairs to the building through daily maintenance and regular deep clean sessions.
    » Within their teams, each resident will provide meals (lunch & dinner, daily) for the house, learning cooking and food hygiene skills.
    » Each resident will complete accredited training qualifications in topics such as tenancy management, budgeting and debt management.

    What success will look like

    Residents will have the skills & confidence to live independently and understand the issues and demands around tenancy, budgeting and debt management.

    Aim 4

    Personal development – broaden horizons and help residents to engage positively in society.


    » Opportunities to participate in art, music, visiting local cultural centres and taking part in sporting activities, to develop new interests.
    » Participation in volunteering activities within the local community.

    What success will look like

    All residents will have enhanced self-belief, confidence & aspirations & will be more likely to be active & positive citizens within their community.

  • Impact


    The long-term impact of our project will be for individuals to secure & sustain stable employment & accommodation. We capture the number of young people who have left Amber ‘successfully’, moving into accommodation (currently 64%). Of these, 40% went into employment, 13% into education/training & 47% have achieved a major goal. We have also conducted a study with the Ministry of Justice to assess the impact of our work on re-offending rates, which has revealed some very encouraging results.


    The biggest risk to this project is the Team Leader leaving or being unable to work due to sickness. We have experience of recruiting individuals into this role and would not anticipate a long gap if an individual was to leave. The team leaders work together closely and we have a team leader assistant who could provide cover if required. We also provide strong support for staff, including weekly one-to-ones, external supervision, counselling & healthcare, to ensure the wellbeing of our staff.


    Twice a year we send a newsletter to our supporters which is full of stories about the young people we have helped. For our major donors and Trusts, we provide annual reports and offer opportunities to visit one of Amber’s centres and meet our residents and see the impact of our work first hand.

  • Background


    Amber has three centres, one in Surrey, Wiltshire & Devon. However, we receive referrals for residents from all over the country, particularly areas where there is a high rate of homelessness (such as London). We work closely with support services locally, such as prison services, social services, local councils and the police to ensure we help those who most need our support.


    Amber supports homeless and unemployed young people aged 17 – 30. Many of these individuals will be leaving care or prison services and have experienced problems such as drug and alcohol abuse, mental health issues, sexual abuse and low academic achievement. As well as benefiting the individuals we support, this project will have an impact on their friends and family as well as the wider community through the volunteering work that the residents will participate in.

    Over 23 years, we have supported more than 3,000 young people and established 3 residential centres that now support over 250 young people a year. What makes Amber special is our tailored approach that is asset-based & hands on. Based around the principles of restorative practice, our approach seeks to create positive behaviour change through a mix of active participation in our programme, wider community engagement and a focus on residents taking active responsibility for their own decisions.

    Team Leader

    Delivers Ambers’ programme directly, providing one-to-one support, training and encouragement to individuals to help transform their lives.

    Centre Manager

    Oversees the operational running of the centre, and provides support and assistance to staff and residents.

    Corporate And Community Partners

    Provide vital opportunities for work experience, vocational training, volunteering and CV/employability training for our residents.

    The Residents

    Individuals who have faced challenging situations but have the motivation to make the changes necessary to move forward in their lives.
