3D Breast Biopsy System
Improving detection of early breast cancer using 3D technology to target biopsies more accurately.
April 2018 - March 2019
Charity information: Scannappeal
The one stop Breast Care Unit for Buckinghamshire needs a biopsy guidance system to enable more targeted biopsies to be undertaken using 3D technology, and increase capacity. An X ray guided system and lateral arm accessory will improve how tissue is obtained for diagnosis.
This one stop breast diagnostic and treatment service supports 23,000 patients each year of which 1,000 patients will need X ray guided biopsy having been recalled from routine screening or are new symptomatic cases.
3D technology enables accurate placement of the biopsy needle; the lateral arm allows biopsies on almost every area of the breast, increasing the chance of getting an accurate diagnosis. X-ray guidance means more tissue can be obtained at the time of biopsy, so pathology can be reported earlier. The procedure is more comfortable for the patient and reduces the ‘time to first offered treatment’ period from three weeks to one week, minimising patient anxiety.
To purchase a 3D breast biopsy guidance system with 3D capability, and a lateral arm accessory.

What success will look like
Once the equipment is purchased, quarterly figures will be remitted to our Trustees to monitor usage.
It is estimated 1,000 patients a year will benefit from more accurate diagnosis of early breast cancer, more comfortable procedures and reduced 'time to first offered treatment' period.
Fundraising is on a best efforts basis and there is no commitment to provide the equipment within a certain timescale. Our main risk is that fundraising will take longer than we anticipate, bearing in mind this is one of several fundraising projects currently active.
Two newsletters are mailed each year to supporters plus various enewsletters. We have an active Facebook page and Twitter account. Regular personal letters are sent to high net worth donors and trusts to inform them of progress.

The equipment will be in the integrated Breast Care Unit for Buckinghamshire, based at Wycombe Hospital. This treats patients from Buckinghamshire and immediate neighbouring areas of Berkshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Oxfordshire.
23,000 women who are invited for breast screening each year who may be recalled for biopsy, plus nearly 5,000 symptomatic cases each year who may need a biopsy.
Scannappeal has been raising funds for life saving and life changing equipment for over 30 years and has a strong core of supporters in the Buckinghamshire area.
