Project information

Education for Burmese refugee children.

Tens of thousands of Burmese have fled persecution to neighbouring countries.
In Thailand there are huge refugee camps on the border.
We are working with the One Sky Foundation who are based there and registered with the Thai government to provide education for refugee children.

November 2018 - November 2019

  • Need

Most refugee families are very poor and many are unable to send their children to school as they need to supply uniform, books and pay some fees.
Because of this, many families are sending their children to orphanages hoping they will get an education there.
Many of these orphanages are run by unscrupulous people who keep the children underfed and dirty in order to raise money.
We work to remove children from these orphanages, reunite them with their families and fund their education.

As well as helping to reunite families, we are putting pressure on the Thai government to regulate these orphanages.
We also support families who have not sent their children to orphanages but who have kept their children but are unable to send them to school for financial reasons.
Our assistance applies to all levels of education from primary to high school.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To educate refugee children whose families are too poor to fund their education

» Support families with education costs and subsistence assistance where necessary.

    What success will look like

This project has been running for some time and many children are now being educated who otherwise would be on the streets working or begging.

    Aim 2

    Prevent the breakup of families.

» Remove children from orphanages where they are potentially open to deprivation and abuse and return them to their families whom we will then support.

    What success will look like

This has also been proven and many families are delighted to be able to care for their own children with our support.

  • Impact

The outlook for refugees is bleak. One of the ways that we can help is by giving them education which can lead to future opportunities.
We also are also trying to influence the authorities to change some of the regulations relating to unregistered and an authorised orphanages as well as trying to prevent human trafficking.

There is virtually no risk involved.
The amounts of money given to each family is relatively small so even if the occasional subsidy was lost or used incorrectly it would have very small impact on the overall success of the project

Every year, a full report is published of the work being done with the refugees.
Should the donors require interim reports these can be supplied on request.

  • Background

We cover an area of about 70 km along the Thai border with Burma in the Sangkhlaburi region.

Families are reunited with their children who have been sent away to "orphanages".
Children who would otherwise not get educated are now supported to attend school.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

HEAL Kids Foundation has been working inside Burma (Myanmar) for 10 years with a wide range of successful projects.
There has been ongoing violence and genocide of both Muslims (Rohinga) and Christian tribes (Karen, Mon, Chin etc.)
The government clamps down on any NGOs working in Burma who also support the refugees so it is dangerous for us to work with them under our own name
We have therefore joined with the One Sky Foundation who are based on the border in Thailand to help Burmese refugees.
