East Dorset and Ringwood Debt Centre

We support residents from the East Dorset and Ringwood areas who are in crisis because of unmanageable debt. We give them hope and a plan to become debt free. We offer befriending support and life skills if required for the whole of the time they are on their journey our of debt.

January 2019 - December 2019

  • Need

Families and individuals in unmanageable debt for whatever reason usually have other life issues they need support in. For example: poor mental heath, low literacy levels in adults, family relationship breakdown, insecure housing, parenting challenges, chronic physical and mental health challenges in both adults and children. Living in a rural area also brings its own set of issues for those on low incomes. Our Centre befriends and actively signposts wherever we can, whatever the need is.

Funding raised through the Big Give challenge 2018 will go towards our CAP Centre costs for another year. We have worked with over 50 clients since we began this service, and currently have 11 clients who are now debt free. We know there are many more who need our support on their journey out of debt, and we are training another debt coach this year to help with the growing need.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To support local people with unmanageable debt on their journey to become and stay debt free.

» Fundraise through the Big Give Christmas Challenge
» Apply for grants and donations this summer so we can continue to offer this service in 2019. Our total costs for the Debt Centre is £12,000 p.a.
» Fundraise by organising a sponsored Wing Walk at Compton Abbas airfield. Our target is £4,000 for this event.

    What success will look like

We aim to help up to 2 new debt clients per month during 2019 in addition to our current clients. Successful funding will ensure that all costs will be met for this project.

  • Impact

More people in our local area will become debt free, be taught budgeting and life skills, be given support to re-socialise through attending our community café and other activities held at the Resource Centre.
To support an individual, couple or family to be free of debt and give them the life skills they need to stay debt free is to give them real hope of a better quality of life and levels of well being. Tenants who are able to pay their rent are no longer under constant threat of eviction.

The risk that we are unable to meet our funding target means that we have to apply for more grants to cover costs in 2019. We will continue to fundraise throughout the year so that the project will continue.

We will report back to identified donors when requested with a project update, and will send out an invitation to our AGM in February 2019. Our annual accounts are usually available by the summer of each year and can be sent if requested to any corporate or individual donor.

  • Background

We are in a semi- rural area of Dorset, and also cover Ringwood just into Ringwood, as we are the nearest Debt Centre to this urban area. Poverty is often hidden in rural areas, with social isolation and lack of local jobs affecting low income families who score high on the index of multiple disadvantage for this local area. These figures are, however, hidden within the larger more affluent area of Dorset as a whole. So we find it more worthwhile to look for funding from local sources.

Families and individuals in unmanageable debt in East Dorset and Ringwood, especially those who need regular and ongoing support to stick to their journey of debt plans. Those who have lost hope of ever being debt free are given an achievable plan and goal, individual life skills and befriender support when required, and access to other activities which help to reduce social isolation and stress.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Our charity the Bus Stop Club have partnered with Hope Church Ferndown to run the East Dorset CAP Centre. Our Resource Centre is well placed as a Debt Centre, on the most disadvantaged parish in East Dorset, the Tricketts Cross estate, tucked away on the edge of the more affluent main town of Ferndown. We have 13 years experience of running family activities, and 4 years as a Debt Centre. Staff are experienced and well supported by both the Management Committee and CAP Head Office, Bradford.
