Giving Looked After Children a Great Night Out

There are 799 looked after children in Manchester between the ages of 5 & 15. We want to give them an exciting Christmas memory of a trip to the theatre. Christmas is a time to feel festive and create memories, we want to make this happen for some of Manchester's most vulnerable young people.

    Need

Did you know there are 799 looked after children in Manchester between the ages of 5 and 15? We want to give them an exciting Christmas memory. Christmas is a time to have fun, feel festive and create memories to last a life time, we want to make this happen for some of Manchester's most vulnerable young people. Many families see Christmas as a time to go on adventures, spend quality time together and have fun, we believe all children should have this opportunity.

    Solution

Working with a variety of support organisations, we will offer children in care a free night out at the theatre, with their foster careers and/or support workers. All the young people will enjoy arts and craft activities prior to the show, interval ice creams and be whisked away into an hilarious and heart-warming re-imagining of Black Beauty.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To fund tickets, interval treats and art activities for all of Manchester's looked after children.

    Activities

» A night at the theatre, watching Black Beauty, with arts and craft activities and interval treats!

    What success will look like

Success will be every child that comes to see the show. The more children we can provide tickets for, the more successful the project!

  • Impact

    Impact

Giving young people a great night out is more than that evening. Z-arts offers activities all year round, not just great theatre experiences, but daily arts and crafts activities, dancing, drama and music.
The more a young person engages with Z-arts, the more their health and wellbeing improves and that of those around them. Since engaging with us many young people have increased attainment in schools, have increased confidence, and become more in control of their mental and physical health.

    Risk

Some young people in care may not be accessible. We have previously worked with lots of carers and organisations that work with looked after children, so interest in our work is spreading.
Many looked after children are in vulnerable positions and Z-arts recognises this with our extensive safe-guarding policy, accessibility programme and specialist training for staff. Under GDPR, many of our database has not registered to receive fundraising, to tackle this we will use our print and sales team.

    Reporting

We will display our progress on our social media and website. After the project we will write to all supporters (including images where suitable) to share how positive the project has been and how many young people attended. We will also invite key donors to our opening night VIP launch family party

We are based in Hulme, just south of Manchester City Centre and over 50% of the young people that attend our daily sessions live below the poverty line. We have been running since 2000.

    Beneficiaries

The main beneficiaries will be looked after children from across Manchester, between the ages of 5 and 15. This will be their opportunity, along with their carers to have a great night out and create a festive memory for years to come.

We work directly with schools, families and support groups so all young people, regardless of background, identity, home-life or status is able to access Z-arts and take part. We have created specialist access days, so young people with sensory needs who struggle to be in the building when it is at capacity can come and enjoy a day out, we have created wellbeing sessions, after families shared with us their concerns.
