The Door's Mentoring Scheme provides vital 1:1 support for young people facing a vast array of issues and challenges. Our award winning team of over 50 volunteers come from all walks of life and form an army of positive role models ready and waiting to help young people move forward in their journey

Young people need someone to listen to them, someone to trust, someone who will invest in them and their future, someone who cares.
Statutory and local agencies, such as social care, adolescent mental health services and schools, are struggling to manage the increased numbers of young people living with poor emotional and mental health as well as those displaying disruptive or even abusive patterns of behaviour. They frequently turn to The Door for the additional support a mentor can provide
The Door will recruit, train and support a team of volunteer mentors to work 1:1 with young people through long term relationships, to help them articulate their needs and put the steps in place to achieve positive progress in their lives.
The value of mentoring is well documented by The Door and nationally. Locally we know that in 3 key areas - Education and Aspiration, Social Skills & Managing Negative Behaviours - young people progress on average between 20 & 25% through having a mentor.
Recruit and train 24 new volunteer mentors
Activities» Run an ongoing recruitment campaign across the Stroud District to inspire new volunteers to join the team
» Run at least 3 training courses through the year to train and equip these new mentors
» Develop an online e-training platform to provide some initial and ongoing training for the volunteers
» Run a monthly \"Group Development\" session for mentors to get ongoing training and peer support from other mentors, and feel part of the team
What success will look like
24 new volunteers will be recruited and trained successfully and will be actively mentoring young people

Activities» Ensure referral routes into the service are wide ranging so that as many young people as need mentoring are aware of the scheme
» Provide well trained and supported mentors to give 1:1 support to young people through long-term meaningful relationships
» Provide a robust assessment and review framework to capture successes of mentoring further increasing self esteem as young people recognise progress
What success will look like
80 young people will have been mentored.
They will report anecdotally and through the mentor review process that they are better able to deal with their issues and move forward.

- These all demonstrated through the anecdotal and hard data from mentoring, plus feedback from mentors, mentees and other stakeholders

We produce monthly e-newsletters and quarterly paper newsletters highlighting the successes of our work
We use social media regularly to report what's happening
Each donor is invited to our Celebration and Awards night in the autumn to meet service users, volunteers and staff.

Stroud is a rural district of Gloucestershire comprising of several small market towns and a number of villages and hamlets. There is significant rural isolation due to lack of transportation and communication. Within the towns there are pockets of high deprivation, clustered around social housing which is often inadequate. Due to the rural nature of the area there are low levels of aspiration, and although unemployment is low, the prospects of long term meaningful employment are limited.
Young people aged 11-25 years old.
Whilst the project is open to all young people regardless of demographic or status, typically it engages with those who are facing social or economic isolation or disengagement.
The Door has been working with young people in the Stroud District since 1991, and established its Mentoring Service in 2001.
It is now highly regarded across the area as the lead provider of support services for young people, and has highly trained and experienced professional staff.
We have received 2 national awards - Youthwork Employer of The Year and the Queens Award for Voluntary Services

I was relieved to know there would be someone who would just be interested in the way I was feeling without bringing their own stuff to the conversation. From the moment I met Sally we just clicked. She is like a best friend and a mum and a favourite teacher all rolled into one
