  • Need

Children growing up in low-income, unemployed families face many challenges in the course of their young lives. These children are more likely to experience multiple family transitions, move frequently, and change schools. The schools they attend are often less well funded and the neighborhoods in which they live are typically disadvantaged. Social and economic deprivation during childhood and adolescence has a lasting effect on young people.

A young person’s wellbeing is intricately connected to the context of their family. As a result services that supportfamily preservation and parenting skillsare well placed to address challenges & broaden the knowledge base in support of all the family members.
Through the services provided, issues affecting families as a unit are addressed, ensuring the development of the young person in a balanced & healthy family environment & in turn lead to a more happy & blossoming adolescence.

  • Impact

It will have a long-term impact on youth and their families through the upliftment, education, support services & training that provides a solid foundation for long-term family support, family cohesiveness, employment opportunities, economic self-sufficiency & hope for a better future. It helps address the demands of the South African employment market by instilling relevant skills & creating job opportunities for the unemployed youth, through the skills development and placement programmes.

There is a real risk that without support, education and empowerment, these families will degenerate and break up, and the cycle of poverty will be perpetuated with very little, real chance of ever breaking out of it and allowing the next generation a different and better future.

We have set up real tangible programmes as outlined above, all of which have mentor structures and support systems around them and who are there to deal with the immediate issues which may arise.

Donors signing up for reports will receive quarterly email updates detailing the performance of the programme. How many families or adolescents received support within each of the programmes, the attendance rates and the graduation rates.

  • Background

South Africa has one of the highest inequality rates in the world. At the same time, unemployment levels are exceedingly high and according to StatsSA, at the end of 2017, youth aged 15 – 34 made up over 67% of the unemployed.
The location of our centres allows us to reach the most vulnerable adolescence and families and to support them and try and get them out of this cycle of poverty and unemployment.

Young township adolescent men and women, who, on average only access meaningful employment at age 27 (men) and 29 (women), if ever.
The adolescent township youth between the ages of 12 and 35 are the focus of benefit from our YSDP along with their families/carers. They come from impoverished communities, live in low income households with inadequate skills training or career guidance and so are least likely to gain employment.
