Children who have a double diagnosis of disability and mental health or disability with impact on emotional health face many difficulties. They struggle with language and communication, fine/gross-motor skills and academic success. Many can't speak at all, and have trouble with social skills, behaviour and emotional regulation. These problems- harsh enough on their own- combined, result in explosive and unhappy children who can’t engage and connect with their surroundings.

Music therapy, as is well documented, has many educational and social benefits for children with special needs. Studies show that music therapy builds children’s self-esteem and feeds their spirits (J. Philo, IFAPA). Using instruments, for listening or supported playing, or just plain singing, serve as powerful tools for reaching even the most tough, detached, frustrated children - drawing reactions and building connections.
To improve the emotional wellbeing of disabled children through Music Therapy.
Activities» Talking about music, e.g. naming contrasts in music such as high/low, loud/soft, long/short etc., develops and improves communication.
» The therapist will help children access and express their emotions either verbally or by using musical instruments, e.g. drumming to release anxiety.
What success will look like
Success means seeing recorded positive feedback from school AND home of improved social skills/ behaviour/ emotional regulation, as noted in each child's progress log.
Use music therapy to enhance the compromised physical wellbeing of disabled children.
Activities» Music Therapy exercises the torso, improving general movement and muscle tone. Specific practice improves posture, gait and fine/gross motor skills.
What success will look like
Our physical therapist will note and evaluate physical advancement, with progress being monitored after every music session, and assessment used to guide further therapy.
1. Give staff the tools to better support learning-disabled children who are emotionally unstable.
The therapist will guide classroom teachers and LSAs on transferring some therapy approaches to the child’s daily learning. Improvements will be logged.
2. Empower family to better help their emotionally vulnerable disabled children.
The families of children in therapy will learn to use music to improve the children’s behaviour and soothe emotions at home. Feedback will be monitored.
1. insufficient instruments- The music room will have a few of each small instrument to ensure there are enough to prevent children from squabbling.
2. Large groups, impeding individual progress- Side by Side will recruit plenty of volunteers assuring that the child to staff ratio is optimal for the children’s advancement.
3. Damage to instruments- This risk too will be mitigated by the presence of sufficient staff members. Regardless, all equipment is to be insured.
Individual progress will be recorded after each session in each child’s ILP book.
A selection of case-studies along with summarized feedback will be posted on our constantly updated site and sent to interested donors.
Biannual reports will be drawn up with parental and staff feedback on progress.

Our project will be on Side by Side's grounds in Hackney, North London. Hackney is a busy, multi-cultural economically disadvantaged community close to central London. Hackney's diversity fosters an atmosphere of tolerance, acceptance and respect.
Side By Side is Hackney's only integrated nursery and special school. Side By Side is a vital community resource that educates each child according to their specialised needs in their specially accommodated building on 9 Big Hill.
32 girls and 37 boys aged 7-16, with a range of disabilities, will benefit from our project.
Besides for the children-the project's greatest beneficiaries- their society will benefit from their improved social integration.
Their family units will enjoy the greater emotional stability and communication skills enhanced via the project. Volunteers and staff working with the children will be better able to do so with happier, calmer and generally more advanced children.

Mr Gerald Lebrett
Mr. Lebrett, Head Teacher of special needs schools with years of experience and Head of Safeguarding, will fill the role of Project Manager.
As a qualified and registered music therapist, he will us music and musical instruments to understand feelings and improve behaviour/relationships.
