  • Need

Alex is cramped and overcrowded with no safe green open space for children to play and explore the natural world. Parks and open spaces are in the more affluent areas of Johannesburg and require transport to get to there. Children play on the congested narrow streets or in tiny dusty backyards. Their recreation time lacks stimulation or the opportunity to develop creative and sporting skills and interests. Instead they are exposed to the dangers of drugs and criminal activity at an early age.

A weekly activity club with transport will provide opportunities for children to get out of the township to visit wildlife sanctuaries, museums, parks, swimming pools, watersports centres etc. In addition it will also offer craft, music and dance workshops in local premises. By involving older young people in the organisation and supervision of the trips and activities it will in turn help develop their skills and confidence and enable them to earn a small much needed income.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To provide children with positive stimulating experiences which are fun, enriching and educational.

» Give children opportunities to learn new physical skills such as cycling, swimming, canoeing, sports, outdoor games.
» Give children access to the countryside, green spaces, the natural world and a chance to enjoy some of the wildlife for which their country is famous.
» Run craft and creative activity workshops for children in local venues to help develop confidence, skills and new interests.

    What success will look like

By the number of children who participate, an account of their individual and group experience, what they learnt, what was new to them and what they most enjoyed.

    Aim 2

To widen children's experience and awareness of what exists in their city and surrounding areas

» Organise a varied range of trips and outings to places of interest to include botanical gardens, wildlife parks, physical activity centres and museums

    What success will look like

A record will be kept of the number of children for whom the trips/outings took them to new places. Encourage them to make a scrap book with photographs of what they liked best.

    Aim 3

Give young people a chance to develop organisational skills by helping to the run the activities.

» With support from Project leaders and for a small remuneration, involve young people in the planning organising and running of the clubs activities.

    What success will look like

Many young people assisted by Gumboots in the past express the wish to 'put something' back into their community. This project gives them an opportunity to help make a difference.

  • Impact

Alex is a tough place for children to grow up, many experience extreme hardship and poverty with little opportunity to play and be children. Their view of the world and their future options are often shaped by this deprivation and harsh early experience. The impact of this project might only be evident in years to come, but we hope by broadening their experience, bringing some fun, excitement and pleasure into their lives, we will help build confidence and influence their future aspirations.

There is a risk that the young people helping to organise and supervise the project
may not always be available. We have a group of about 8 who have expressed interest.
A maximum of 3 will be needed at anyone time so we will organise a rota with back up. A risk
assessment will also be carried out for each of the activities and safe guards put in place. We are reliant on Jack (a Project Leader) as the driver and his vehicle for outings, but if unavailable we can use a reliable safe taxi firm.

Donors to this project will receive our bi-annual newsletter in which we will report on the
project. We will also take photographs and where possible record the children’s views on their experiences and the activities. These will be included in a report for donors and put on our website.

  • Background

Gumboots focuses on working with projects in Alexandra a township in Johannesburg. Alex is characterised by overcrowding, poor housing and public services, a lack of open space, high unemployment particularly amongst youth, high crime rates and failing schools. An estimated 22,000 families live in shacks without running water and sanitation. Government investment has been inadequate and as a legacy of apartheid it remains a stark example of the extreme inequalities which exist in South Africa.

Children between the ages of 4 and 14 growing up in Alex. Selected through the three Gumboots supported projects we plan to benefit around 360 children over the life of the project, as well as providing opportunities for young people to gain experience of working with children and earning a small much needed income.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Gumboots has a long history of working with projects in Alex. Its UK Trustees visit the projects regularly and know the leaders and many of the young people personally. Our approach is 'bottom up' we do not impose our ideas but rather take our lead from those living and working in the township who best know the problems and priorities. Our sister organisation Gumboots SA is locally based and provides us with regular updates of the projects as well as accounting for the funds we raise.
