Build a School, Empower a Community

Every child in school, every child learning. We will transform the education for 3,300 children in Gitare, Kenya, where help is urgently needed. We will work in partnership with eight schools and communities to break down the barriers that are preventing these children accessing a quality education

  • Need

    Need

    Half of Nakuru County’s population, where Gitare is situated, live in poverty. This contributes to low educational attendance (10% absenteeism rates) and poor learning outcomes. The current education system is failing children and their families.
    • Poverty and discrimination stop the most vulnerable children getting an education
    • Schools lack resources they need to teach children
    • Children are leaving school without even basic skills

    Solution

    We address the needs of children at home, at school and in the community. Working together with parents and teachers, we overcome the barriers of poverty and inequality that can stand in their children's way.

    • We construct classrooms and improve access to clean water; creating a safe environment for children
    • We provide educational materials and train teachers to give them the support needed to inspire their students

    Activities

    » We support families to learn basic financial skills and poverty coping strategies to enable them to afford their children’s school fees
    » We help parents earn a secure living by enabling farming families to grow more sustainable crops and get a fair price for their work
    » We establish social enterprises, putting money into the pockets of communities through micro-entrepreneurship schemes

    Improvement in:
    • No. of VSLA members
    • No. of VSLA members taking loans
    • % of pupils feeling supported by their parents
    • % of parents reporting increased financial security


    Aim 2

    Every child in the Gitare cluster has the chance to learn


    Activities

    » We repair, renovate and install latrines, water tanks, hand-washing stations and boreholes to ensure all children have access to clean water
    » We make sure schools are safe and accessible by renovating and constructing classrooms, libraries, staff rooms and kitchens
    » We support every school to meet the needs of every child, making sure that materials are accessible to children with disabilities

    What success will look like

    Improvement in:
    • Number of permanent classrooms and latrines
    • Pupil to book/latrine/classroom ratio
    • % of pupils reporting to access to water / a desk / latrines


    Aim 3

    Every child in the Gitare cluster leaves school with the skills they need


    Activities

    » We help schools to access engaging learning resources to help children get the most out of their time at school
    » We train teachers in methods appropriate for each age group and connect them through collaborative networks to ensure they are well supported
    » We provide training for children in hygiene management to prevent water-borne diseases and help girls manage their menstruation with dignity

    What success will look like

    Improvement in:
    • % of pupils reporting teachers engaging them in class
    • % of teachers engaging pupils in class
    • % of pupils able to name the benefits of handwashing


  • Impact

    Impact

    We partner with schools guided by UNICEF’s Child Friendly School Standards for between three to five years. Our objective is that when we leave, the school will have appropriate infrastructure and resources to meet its needs. It will have effective governance and management system with motivated teachers with the skills to keep it that way.
    This long-term, structured approach to partnership allows us to foster a sense of local ownership of the process, ensuring the sustainability of our work.

    Risk

    Construction carries a number of operational and financial risks. We have a list of vetted construction firms that we have worked with for many years. Works are guided by government approved designs and detailed procurement and contract terms setting out payment terms and conditions against key milestones. Work is supervised by our staff and independent engineers. 10 per cent of the contract value is retained until 6 months after completion in case of any fault.

    Reporting

    Donors will receive bi-annual project reports, case studies and photos. Progress will be measured through a variety of methods including quarterly review meetings with staff and Education Monitoring Groups, monthly and quarterly programme and financial reports and a full final external evaluation.

  • Background

    Location

    Gitare is situated in Nakuru County, in Kenya’s Eastern Province. The eight schools in the Gitare cluster are in remote, rural areas and the schools are often the only facility that local children can access. The majority of the population are smallholder farmers, dependent on agriculture to provide income and to feed their families.

    Beneficiaries

    3,300 children will benefit from this project in Gitare by having their access to and quality of education improved. We will also work with parents to improve their economic and food security, impacting the wellbeing of over 10,000 people. The teachers in the schools will also have much more support and training, as well as living quarters that enable them to have more energy and feel motivated to go to work.
