  • Need

    Need

There is a seasonal rise in incidents of domestic abuse over the Christmas period, and whilst the festivities should be a time for celebration, for those in refuge, it can be particularly difficult. Women and children can experience a rollercoaster of emotions compounded by living in temporary accommodation they don’t identify as ‘home’. Furthermore, many Haven residents are on low/no income and cannot afford to create an authentic Christmas experience for themselves and their children.

    Solution

Giving the Gift of Christmas will enable women and children to experience all that Christmas should be. From giving and receiving gifts, to parties and festive activities, to Christmas dinner. The project will help Christmas to be a time for celebration and help bring families together in refuge to make memories and rebuild bonds. This project will ensure we can run the grotto, provide a three-course festive meal in all six refuges, as well as running parties and activities throughout December.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Enable women and children to choose, and give/receive Christmas gifts

    Activities

» Run a Christmas Grotto in each refuge, set up like a shop, where women and children can choose gifts to give to each other

    What success will look like

Ensuring every woman and child has gifts to give and receive

    Aim 2

Create an authentic Christmas Dinner in each refuge

    Activities

» Purchase, cook and disseminate Christmas Dinner in each communal dining area so women and children can come together to enjoy a Christmas Meal

    What success will look like

Ensuring every woman and child in refuge enjoys a Christmas Meal

    Aim 3

Create a festive atmosphere throughout the month of December, with activities and parties

    Activities

» Through staff and volunteers, deliver activities to celebrate the festivities, from games nights to Christmas film nights

    What success will look like

Delivering festive-themed activities to create a Christmas atmosphere throughout December

  • Impact

    Impact

The long-term impact is intrinsically tied into additional support women and children get in refuge. It’s not only about a safe place to lay their head, it’s about the extra support they can access to overcome the impact of abuse. The more positive experiences residents have whilst in refuge, the more they are able to build their confidence in being able to attain a happy and fulfilled future. This project will help create new, happy memories for women to take forward into a life free from abuse

    Risk

Part of this project relies on the donation of gifts for women and children to give to each other. However, each year The Haven receive a substantial amount of gifts to disseminate; often so many that some are stored for birthdays throughout the year. As such the likelihood of this issue coming to fruition is minimal.

    Reporting

Donors will be thanked in January so that we can report back fully on the impact of the festive period. In addition we send a bi-monthly newsletter to donors who have signed up, which will include a Christmas update, and put stories out on social media for our followers to read.

  • Background

    Location

The Haven is located in Wolverhampton, an area with a diverse population and high levels of deprivation, with a wide set of cultural and religious backgrounds.

Women seeking help from The Haven have experienced physical, sexual, verbal, emotional and financial abuse, as well as FGM, forced marriage, honour based violence, modern slavery, trafficking and sexual exploitation.

    Beneficiaries

Women and children affected by domestic abuse in Wolverhampton who enter one of The Haven’s refuges will benefit from the project. Many women and children who stay in refuge gain additional support that helps them transition back into mainstream society, with many of them moving into further education and work. In this way, the wider community also benefit as women contribute more to the local area and rely less on state support.
