  • Need

    Need

There is a big skills gap in entry-level tech roles. GIT:NK fills a need both for the local unemployed and national employers.

Currently, 22% of people in RBKC are in jobs paying below the London Living Wage (Trust for London 2017) with unemployment in North Kensington at double the national average (IMD 2011). There is a definite need to build skills which lead to employment.

    Solution

GIT:NK will solve this problem by:
    a) offering local people in a deprived area a fantastic opportunity to gain skills to work in Tech.
    b) being a collaboration between local community partners and businesses.
    c) involving people who are expert in providing Tech training.
    d) providing opportunities for wider involvement from businesses.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To support disadvantaged people by providing them with skills to get employment in the tech sector.

    Activities

» Training programme to equip 16 people (48 over 3 cohorts) aged 16+ from North Kensington with the skills, mentoring and training to work in technology

    What success will look like

The key outcome and the return on investment will be to see 48 local people working in jobs in the Tech sector

    Aim 2

To build collaboration between the local community and tech businesses.

    Activities

» We are bringing together local community partners, local people, experts in tech training and tech businesses to provide an innovative programme.

    What success will look like

Success will be demonstrated by tech businesses forming a long term relationship with the local community.

  • Impact

    Impact

The long-term vision is to attract Tech companies to set up in North Kensington and for it to be a thriving community for the industry and local people.

    Risk

Finding a suitable trainer who can provide pastoral support as well as teach the tech curriculum is critical to the success of the course. To recruit the best person for this we are working closely with our Advisory Board network, which has wide and varied reach.
The cohort may be unused to work environments and may struggle with confidence. To overcome this we are are providing a soft skills element of our curriculum and providing mentors to our students

    Reporting

Donors will be provided with an update after each pilot detailing the cohort's progress on the course and progression into employment, work placements or internships.

  • Background

    Location

The project will be based in North Kensington,
where the Grenfell Tower fire took place. The life chances of significant numbers of local people are limited by poverty, lack of education and employment opportunities, poor physical and mental health and isolation. The Grenfell Tower tragedy has both spotlighted these issues which pre-existed the fire, as well as amplifying them.

    Beneficiaries

This pilot phase of the project is specifically for local people living in North Kensington. We have intentionally created this course to be as inclusive as possible, with very broad selection criteria: open to anyone aged 16+, with basic english and maths, living in North Kensington.
