  • Need

Otters are the perfect ambassador species for a healthy environment. Their presence at the top of the food chain and occupying a variety habitats indicates a balanced and clean ecosystem for all to thrive in.
IOSF intends to teach children all about otters, otter conservation, their impact in the ecosystem and environmental conservation. Teaching future generations about the importance of helping the environment will provide long-lasting benefits for the world.

One of the major problems that otters face is a LACK OF AWARENESS. Wildlife conservation and education efforts are often focused on more famous fauna and otters are often overlooked.

IOSF intends to raise the profile of otters and their conservation. By focusing on a few aims we hope that otters are talked about more and individuals have more understanding on a number of factors relating to them.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Visit schools in Scotland using education material composed by IOSF’s education officer

» Visit rural schools around IOSF base and teach them all about otters.
» Offer rural schools the chance of education out with standard curriculum.

    What success will look like

Visit schools in Scotland using education material composed by IOSF’s education officer
Visit numerous schools and interact with a number of children over programme period.

    Aim 2

Create an online otter community for children, parents and schools.

» 'TeamOtter' group acts as a club learning more about species, helping otters and sharing their otter experiences with the world.
» Create Facebook group called ‘Team Otter’. This group allows children, schools and parents to show what they are doing in relation to otters

    What success will look like

Have over 1,000 members on Facebook group.

    Aim 3

Creation of interactive learning material showing threats otters face.

» Create fun and interactive game for children to learn more about otters and their threats, attached to IOSF website

    What success will look like

Create child-friendly game that is used worldwide focusing on otters and the threats they face. Can also be used by adults.

  • Impact

This project will raise awareness, increase popularity and teach environmental benefits of otters across the globe. Having children understand the benefits of healthy otter populations and how they can help the environment ensures that a long-term benefit to the project can be felt.

Future generations gaining a better understanding of they can help the earth around it will ensure a cleaner and healthier world for tomorrow.

Donors to the project will be signed up to IOSF’s monthly newsletter. This newsletter offers all the monthly on goings at IOSF and will keep them up to date on this project, among others.

Everyone will benefit from this project. Offering a better understanding of environmental conservation and consequences of our actions will ensure a healthier world for us to live in.
Otter populations will also benefit as learning more about how they help will increase popularity. Having more people interacting regularly with otters across the world will raise the awareness of the species and the problems it faces.
