  • Need

    Need

Poor dental health within the homeless community.

Our service users find it hard to become registered with an NHS dentist. They would miss appointments and be taken off the list. The waiting time for appointments at the dental hospital is a barrier to them getting treatment in an emergency. So they would often not bother and continue to suffer in agonizing pain.

    Solution

Dentaid have a mobile dental unit which can be brought to our site for two consecutive days each month.

They will be able to see around 10 patients each day, providing a full range of dental treatment. Extractions, fillings, gum treatment and preventative treatment.

They will be able to arrange follow ups for the next month.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Improve the dental hygiene of homeless and vulnerable adults who are not registered with a dentist

    Activities

» Provide on site dental treatment 2 days per month in a mobile dental vehicle.

We will monitor the number of people using the service and the treatments they receive. We will record the changes to their dental health

  • Impact

    Impact

A higher number of homeless and vulnerable adults will have access to dental treatment on a regular basis.

Their overall dental health will be greatly improved.

We will report on the outcomes.

    Risk

The risks could be the availability of the Dentaid vehicle. To avoid problems we would ensure this is booked in advance for the whole year.

Another risk could be clients not turning up to appointments. This is the reason we would have the vehicle on our premises for when people are already attending our services.

    Reporting

We would monitor the numbers of our clients accessing the service. We would record the treatment given to each person.
Our report to donors would include a review of the outputs and outcomes along with at least one case study.

  • Background

    Location

St George's Crypt is based in the heart of Leeds underneath St George's Church. In 1930 at the time of the Great Depression the vaults of the Crypt were cleared to make way for the many men arriving in Leeds looking for work.
The community we serve are homeless, rough sleepers and vulnerable people. We provide crisis support - emergency accommodation, hot food, clothing, showers. We run activities and training, alongside health and well being projects.

    Beneficiaries

Homeless and vulnerable adults over the age of 18 who are not currently registered with an NHS dentist.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Our community are homeless, rough sleepers, people in temporary accommodation, sofa surfing and or vulnerable adults most of whom live chaotic lifestyles.

We have an average of 25 temporary residents at our care centre at any one time and around 100 people each weekday coming to us for a hot meal at lunch time.

We know from many years experience that having health services on site is the best way for our clients to access and are far more likely to turn up to a pre-arranged appoinment
