The Multi-Story Youth Choir
The Multi-Story Youth Choir gives young people from Peckham and the surrounding area the opportunity to take part in high-quality music-making with professional musicians, supporting them to develop their creative and musical skills.
August 2018 - August 2018
Charity information: Multi-story Music
It is widely proven that taking part in singing and creative music-making activities can have a profound positive effect on young people. However, changes in the school curriculum and cuts to school budgets mean that there are fewer opportunities for young people to get involved in high-quality musical activities. This is only exacerbated by minimal free holiday activities for young people to take part in music-making activities, no matter what their previous musical experience.
Through their involvement in the choir, the participants (most of whom have little or no previous experience of classical music) will have the chance to take part in regular music-making activity, developing their vocal and creative music skills alongside professional musicians. The choir will provide an inspirational and transformative opportunity for local young people, widening their social and cultural horizons, and building new skills and confidence.

The project will provide an inspiring and creative opportunity for young people to participate in high-quality music-making. It will build a long-lasting relationship with local families and schools and enable us to continue running choir projects in the future. We will also offer further opportunities for participants to attend other Multi-Story Orchestra events and workshops in Peckham. We will track our communications with participants and their ongoing engagement with Multi-Story activity.
Participants drop-out: we identify participants in partnership with local schools and music services and have strong relationships with local families, ensuring we are well placed to replace any late drop outs.
We will send donors three email reports including an introduction to the project, an update whilst the project is taking place and a report sharing highlights and feedback once the project is complete. All donors will be invited to the public performance as the culmination of this project.

The Multi-Story Youth Choir is based in Peckham, South-East London and will perform at Bold Tendencies Car Park. The participants will be drawn from a number of local schools in Southwark and Lewisham, all of which have a diverse population and above average numbers of pupils eligible for Pupil Premium and free school meals.
The main beneficiaries will be the members of the youth choir – 60 young people aged 8-12. They will take part in four days of intensive music workshops and rehearsals, culminating in a public performance to audiences of up to 600 people.
The choir first came together in 2017 to perform in the BBC Proms at Bold Tendencies. Their performance was widely acclaimed: “these young performers summoned a musical maturity all their own – their focus unfaltering...their eyes alight” ***** (The Guardian). We received much positive feedback from participants and families showing huge demand for the activity to continue. We are well placed to do this through our community connections and experience of delivering high-quality music activity.
