  • Need

Hackney has a diverse population of young people and families from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds who do not have access to safe free summer play activities which means many of them spend their summer indoors. As a result they are not developing their social skills and they are not getting enough exercise.

UBG will take our successful model of summer playdays on the road setting up safe inviting opportunities to play and socialise in 4 different locations across our local area. At each playday there will be an opportunity to play games, sports, arts and crafts and making healthy snacks. We will also encourage each group to attend playdays at other nearby locations.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

develop social skills and confidence through play

» Playing and learning boardgames from around the world.

    What success will look like

observation and feedback from participants. feedback from families. ability to teach new skills to others and confidence to visit new locations.

    Aim 2

    increase physical activity levels

» playing and learning new sports and games: badminton, hockey, skipping, hula hoops, cricket, juggling and many more.

    What success will look like

Observation and feedback from young people. increased interest in finding opportunities to exercise e.g joining local clubs.

    Aim 3

    develop knowledge of healthy snacks

» prepare and create tasty, healthy snacks from fresh foods.

    What success will look like

Observation and feedback from young people and families. Observe a difference in snacks that they bring to playdays and listen to and create their ideas for new healthy snacks.

  • Impact

More confidence and skills among a wider group of local young people, increased exercise and fitness levels and more awareness of healthy eating. More young people visiting different locations in their neighborhood, trying new activities and meeting new people. UBG will get feedback from local organisations about new members and how they found out about their projects.

There could be two possible risks to the success of this project: 1. wet weather
    2. finding young people.
the locations of our 4 partner organisations will have indoor space for bad weather. we will promote the summer playdays through local schools, mosques, and our partners organisations to ensure that all local young people and their families know about them.

We will compile a project report detailing the success and possible improvements for next time. This report will be circulated to our donors.

  • Background

The project will be run in Robin Hood Community Garden E5 with outreach playdays in Medina Mosque, lea bridge road, Springfield park E5 and Clapton Library E5.

Mobile Summer Playdays will benefit local young people and families living in Hackney. The area is high density population of low income families living in overcrowded conditions. The area has a high rate of petty crime and many parents are afraid to let their children play outside which results in many spending the summer inside, safe but unstimulated. Our project will enable many young people to have fun and feel part of their community this summer.
