Surviving Winter 2017

During the cold winter months many people have to choose between heating their home, putting food on the table or buying their children a suitable winter coat. These incredibly difficult decisions are common for so many people and BCF aims to raise £10k to support people experiencing fuel poverty.

    Need

    The rising cost of fuel prices has led to an increase in fuel poverty in our local communities. With pensions and wages failing to keep up with rising fuel costs many individuals and families are struggling to make ends meet during the cold winter months. Some pensioners have to make the incredibly difficult decision to heat their homes or put food on the table, while many families have to choose between buying their children a suitable winter coat or heating their homes sufficiently.

    Solution

    BCF provides grants to charities and community groups who are actively supporting people experiencing fuel poverty in our local community. By donating to Surviving Winter and having your donation doubled by the Big Give BCF will ensure that these small, hard to reach organisations, who provide a lifeline to so many people in Berkshire, receive the vital funding they need to support people experiencing this very hidden need that grows year on year.

    To reduce those experiencing fuel poverty which in turn will improve mental and physical wellbeing.

    » Provide funding to support those in fuel poverty as well as providing them with support and tools to help them in the future.

    We will provide case studies from those who have been supported as well as the number of people who have been supported through the various charitable projects that we are funding.

    Impact

    The long term changes will be to equip those who are experiencing fuel poverty with the tools they need to budget for their fuel costs during the cold winter months as well as supporting them during their times of crisis when they have to make the extremely difficult choice between keeping warm or providing food or suitable clothing for their family. Through our grant reporting process we will be able to show how many people have been supported and the impact it has had.

    Risk

    At BCF due diligence is carried out on all grant applications ensuring that the grants are used in the correct way for their specified purpose. Our 30 years experience and unique reach into the local community has meant that all the grants that have been awarded have been successful in addressing an identified need in our local community. The due diligence that is carried out by our experienced team is a huge factor for people donating through BCF and provides reassurance to all our donors.

    Reporting

    Donors will be provided with details of the grants that have been awarded to charities along with case studies of how the projects have impacted on the beneficiaries and the difference it has made to their lives.

  • Background

    Location

    Grants will be provided to charities based in Berkshire delivering a service to Berkshire residents. Berkshire is often perceived as an affluent County, however there are hidden pockets of deprivation all over the County which is exasperated by the very expensive housing market (rented and home ownership) and wages failing to keep up with the rising cost of living. As one of the most expensive areas in the Country to live the potential for residents to fall into fuel poverty is high.

    Beneficiaries

    Pensioners who have little or no income beyond their state pension, families and individuals in low paid jobs or on zero hours contracts where despite working their income is not covering the costs of their basic needs, people who have had to give up work through no fault of their own due to their poor physical or mental health, and those who are transferring onto the new Universal Credit system that has already caused significant issues and delays plunging many people into poverty.

    BCF has been at the forefront of local charitable giving in Berkshire for the last 30 years. We award nearly £1million in grants to hundreds of local charities each year. Our evidence based annual research report called 'Vital Signs' identifies the key issues affecting Berkshire and allows us to strategically channel our giving to the causes that need it the most, many of which go unnoticed by the general public, maximising the impact of our grants and make a transformation difference.
