Surviving Winter Appeal

The Surviving Winter Appeal raises donations for local older people suffering during the winter months because of fuel poverty and social isolation. Every winter, here in Dorset, an average of 300-400 people die. Shockingly, this number went up to 920 during the winter of 2014/15!

  • Need

We are urging local people to recycle unwanted winter fuel allowances and help older people in need.

Many self-reliant older people are at risk during the winter months, particularly if they turn down their heating to save money or become trapped indoors due to bad weather and icy road conditions.

Locally the statistics of 300-400 older people are shocking and nationally these translate into an older person dying every 7 minutes!

We recycle winter fuel allowances ( a non means tested benefit) and by working with the local Citizens Advice Bureaus disperse them to people in need - here in Dorset!

Feel free to support this cause if you feel passionate about it - we accept general donations as well.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Help older people in fuel poverty who are at risk during the winter months.

    » Raise donations and awareness
» Work with Citizens Advice in Dorset and disperse the donations as we receive them.

    What success will look like

Since first launching the Appeal in 2011 we have helped hundreds of local older people. We track grant recepients and we know how many people your kind donations have helped.

  • Impact

We aim to raise awareness of the issue of fuel poverty and winter mortality which is the long term aim. The short term aim is to raise donations and help people who are struggling now, this winter, as they are at risk.

The success of the Appeal fully depends on donations from the general public. The vast majority of donations are made up of unwanted winter fuel allowances which are non means-tested benefits.

We thank all of our donors - either online or via a personalised letter ( if we have your address).

When we complete the annual appeal in March we also let them know what the Appeal has achieved - how many local people were helped.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We are been running the Appeal since 2011 and during that time have established support networks for older people that stretch far beyond the winter fuel grants.

Via our work with the Citizens Advice and other organisations older people in need benefit from additional support such as benefits and home insulation advice.

Will help a local older person in need with their quaterly fuel bill - so they are warm and safe

Thank you so much for the grant. It has made such a difference. I now have warm water and have been able to heat my main room. My heath has also improved.
