Just £3 Gives a girl her dignity back
Working with our partner Dignity Period, Ethiopiaid is committed to changing attitudes to menstruation in Tigray schools and communities, supporting girls to stay in education by offering, clean, safe and sustainable access to sanitary packs.
October 2017 - December 2020
Charity information: Ethiopiaid
In the Tigray region of Ethiopia 98% of girls lack access to sanitary products which are expensive and difficult to find. Girls are forced to use whatever materials are available such as grass, leaves, old rags or nothing at all.
Dignity Period focuses on changing attitudes to menstruation in Tigray schools and communities, supporting girls to stay in education. Working with a local enterprise, which employs more than 50 local women, they produce and distribute reusable sanitary packs which include soap, pads and underwear.
Young women in Tigray are each given a pack so they can manage their monthly cycles discreetly.

What success will look like
So far over 7,000 girls have received packs but there are approximately a further 12,000 girls who we want to reach by 2017.
We hope that by providing sanitary packs, more girls will be able to stay in school during their monthly cycles and therefore attain higher grades and progress through their education. We will be able to demonstrate our success with greater attendance and higher grades for girls in the schools we work in.
Regular reporting, monitoring, field visits and financial management from our partner Dignity Period will enable us to manage risk in an effective way.
We will provide regular updates, online via our website and through email newsletters, as well as sharing successes through our regular appeals.

Ethiopiaid dedicate their support to Ethiopia. The project will be lead by our experienced partner Dignity Period and operations will take place across the Tigray region.
Directly, you will help 12,000 young teenagers struggling to cope with their monthly cycles, too embarrassed or uncomfortable to attend school. Indirectly, you will help lift the taboo around periods which remains in Ethiopia.
