The "Barn" Project

The "Barn" project has been undertaken by a group within the steam loco dept to help rebuild a donated barn from a farm in Wiltshire. The reconstruction of the barn will take place in Blunsdon station car park and the area around it will be used to maintain and prep the current loco fleet.

January 2017 - April 2018

  • Need

    Need

Currently, our members have to walk or travel to our main Engine shed and workshops to maintain and prep our fleet of heritage steam and Diesel Locomotives. Space is always paramount and often projects are placed on hold until space becomes available.

Also there can be difficulties with prepping locos as wood and coal are often delivered to Blunsdon, a mile away from Hayes Knoll Shed.

    Solution

The "Barn" project, will give us a new space to help prep and maintain our locomotive fleet and also allow use of the area to undertake heavy lifting of bogies/frames/boilers etc.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    Construct the main barn structure

    Activities

» Use existing materials to rebuild the barn in it's new location

Once the barn is constructed, we will show it in use with Locomotives.

    Aim 2

    Workshop area

    Activities

» Add a concrete floor adjacent to the barn to make an adequate workshop and prep space
» Restore workshop machinery that has been purchased or kindly donated.

Allow workshop tours to members of the public to see our achievements.

  • Impact

    Impact

The long term changes will be:

    Easier access for staff,
    Prep locomotives efficiently,
Allow members to learn new skills - boilerwork/machining etc.

    Risk

Adverse weather has already affected us. The current floor of the project is muddy and full of hardcore as the area was previously marshland many years ago.

We have dealt with this by securing the beams of the structure with concrete pads for us to at least have a roof over our heads! Once up, we can then work on the dry ground to create stability and a clean working area.

    Reporting

Emails, regular updates in the Swindon and Cricklade Railway Magazine.
