First Days Mobile Support Unit

At First Days Children’s Charity we believe every child deserves the same start in life.
We are fundraising for a mobile support unit to continue this essential work. Our aim is to provide crisis relief alongside day-to-day support for families in crisis. Building trust and offering support.

  • Need

4 millions children live in poverty in the UK - when children grow up living in need they miss out. Hot food, warm clothes, clothes that fit, a safe place to sleep and school trips. They feel outcast, like they are different.
First Days offers support to those families living in need to bridge the gap. Working with childcare professionals to reach people who are struggling to provide for their young families and offer practical support.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

We want to make it easier to reach as many families as we can who are living in poverty

» If we can make First Days mobile - we can reach more people by going to them.

    What success will look like

A clear rise in numbers in the areas that the mobile unit accesses will prove we are reaching more families and providing vital support

    Aim 2

We want to help the 'hidden' families - the ones who do not ask fro help but need it

» We know that we are only helping a small number of families - if our service was more visible more people would use it.

    What success will look like

We know that many families are worried about going directly to social services - by seeing an increase of referrals / enquiries we know we are gettin to more people

    Aim 3

We want to offer longer term support to families living in need.

» We know that families who are struggling need ongoing support - going to them will build trust and we can offer more support to the families

    What success will look like

We want families to be referred to us for 3-6 months so we can build a relationship and help provide what they need for their young families

    Aim 4

We want to support child care professionals - with more cuts and less people, they need out help

» Time spent coming to our HQ is wasted - if we can get to them it will allow them to visit and support more families

    What success will look like

We know from our research that professinals want to refer and help more but are constricted by time. if we can reduce that time we are helping - more referral will show this.

  • Impact

The long term plan is to reach more families, in more areas and offer longer term support to ensure they can provide for their families. Although the service is free, they need to build a relationship with our teams and take the responsibility of coming to the referral mobile unit to ensure their children are catered for. It is helping a family to grow and be in control.

The biggest risk is families who have not been referred to us coming to access the service. We have encountered this, so there is a level of security that needs to be put in place. But we have it in different locations at different times and all families have to be referred and the first visit needs to be with the referrer. We will also monitor what each family has to ensure that there is no overlap and it does not encourage families to take items the do not need for themselves

Each quarter we produce a management report which details the number of referrals - this can be broken down to age, ethnicity, post code / area and we can add whether its on the mobile unit or via our standard referral system

  • Background

First Days is based in Woodley (Reading) but we will be covering
Typically on paper these areas are deemed 'affluent' and have low numbers of families living in poverty. Our numbers and research through the agencies / organsiations that work wtih us prove that wrong. Our numbers are increasing monthly - we want to reach as many families as we can.

We want to reach as many families who are living in poverty. We want to include those suffering from a short and long term poverty. We take over 120 referrals each month, we offer a free school uniform service and a christmas toy service. We know there are so many more families we can be offering support to.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We offer a completely unique service. We operate like a food bank, but we have no assesment critera. Families do have to be referred by a child care professional but we make it simple and easy for our colleagues in already stressful jobs to access. We help them do their jobs properly. We are an unpaid resource to help families in need. A social worker can only do her job well if she can support, encourage and coach a family. We give them the tools and capability to do that.
