Add a floor campaign
By adding a mezzanine floor, we can increase the facilities we offer to our members. We would like to add a yoga studio, a counselling room, massage room plus a quiet room for members and carers. Downstairs we can increase our extremely popular disability friendly gym area and physio room.
Start December 2017 & continue from there
Charity information: Nottingham Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre
We have seen an increase in demand for exercise facilities but do not have the space to offer extra classes or add more equipment. Our members are requesting yoga & tai chi plus extra equipment to go in our extremely popular gym area. We have been in our centre for over 30 years so are well established in Nottingham. Our landlords are supporters of our charity and offer excellent rent so moving is not an option. We need to increase floor space without moving.
The addition of a mezzanine floor will allow us to build a yoga studio, massage and counselling room plus free up space downstairs to increase our gym area plus add a volunteer led café area to help build job skills. Our centre offers a non-judgmental, fully understand and safe space for both members and carers needing support and the café will help that expand. We will also run healthy eating courses from the café area.

Long term, we hope that our project will expand on the reputation we already have. We hope to encourage people who may feel anxious at the prospect of standard exercise classes or gyms by offering a relaxed, friendly and purposely equipped facility to handle their requirements. Success would be a 100% increase in membership numbers over the next three years. We’ll monitor each member’s progress to help create a picture of how exercise can help them manage their physical symptoms & mental health
The biggest risk would be ensuring the health and safety of our members so we are working closely with various agencies to ensure that access is available to the upstairs floor, by foot, wheelchair or crutches. We would install a lift and an upstairs fire escape in addition to existing facilities.
We will send a report to donors detailing the numbers of users in each part of the new floor area, so the yoga suite, counselling room etc. We would also include volunteer hours and success stories. Statistical data regarding the impact of exercise will be report bi-annually.

Our centre is based on the outskirts of Nottingham City Centre, in Colwick. We cover the whole of the county, with a population of approximately 800,000 and are the only facility of our kind in Notts. We opened in 1984, primarily just accepting members with MS for hyperbaric oxygen therapy. In 2015 we opened our doors to any who would benefit & our membership now stands at 50% MS, 40% cancer & 10% other. We offer complementary and alternative therapies to help members manage symptoms.
Any person living with a chronic health condition or disability may benefit from coming to our centre. As well as the therapies on offer, we also have a safe and welcoming community to help people laugh, talk or just sit and drink tea. Yoga, for example, has proven benefits in helping people with musculoskeletal issues. We also aim to help people’s mental health, in respect of chronic health problems, through exercise and counselling.
We are the only facility in Nottinghamshire, and some other surrounding counties, to offer our specific range of therapies. By increasing our floorspace we will be able to increase the facilities offered on site. Members already feel comfortable coming to us and more join every week. By adding yoga etc we hope to attract even more.
