Respite of Disabled Children and Famlies

To provide free holidays to disabled children/their families and carers. Last year we raised over £50,000 to purchase a bespoke caravan at Amble Links in Northumberland, a brand new wheelchair accessible caravan, with wet room and suitable equipment for the most severely disabled children.

    Need

    To overcome pecuniary disadvantage; to provide a much needed refreshing break for families; to make "life-long" memories for families caring for children with "life-limiting illnesses"; to have fun/be spirited; and to actually have a holiday/break because many families simply find it too difficult to pay for or organise around their child's health needs taking priority. To promote inclusion in our community. To ensure siblings are included, as often they miss out being young carers.

    Solution

    We ensure all 20 families at Out of Sight have a break, without cost to themselves. we provide everything to the families free of charge; we cater for all the needs of the family this 5 star caravan site is open all year and provides two swimming pools, gym, children and adult entertainment free in a family room, outdoor parks and play areas, and it is walking distance to a beach. We have provided in house entertainment and a specailised wheelchair to access the beach (4 minute walk away).

    » By providing a 5 Star Wheelchair accessible, with wet room facility free of charge on at Amble Links in Northumberland.

    » By providing free Swimming, Gym, Outdoor Play Areas, and children and adult free entertainment.
    » By providing, indoor entertainment: games; computers; sensory equipment; TV and DVD and memories books/crafting materials

    Impact

    To help the whole of the family including young carers, with siblings with severe disability, have a much well needed break. Often they can "miss out" due to the child with disability taking priority. To ensure parents and carers have a break without the worry of finances, to promote inclusion, to meet the complex health needs of the disabled child providing the appropriate equipment. Feedback, photographs, memory books.

    Risk

    We have Risk Assessed; Pat Tested; provided Fire Drills; and included a Booklet at the Caravan to provide for every foreseeable risk. We work hand in hand with the site who provide insurance; and maintenance team. We have interviewed all parent using our facililty to set ground rules. We will ensure annually everything is reviewed including all equipment.

    Location

    Amble in Northumberland. Right beside a beach; near High Street and Harbour; on a 5 Star Holiday Site with 5 Start Facilities to match. Including swimming pools; free activities for children and adults in the private members rooms; gym; outdoor play areas; with disability access to the beach via our specailised wheelchair hippocampe.     Beneficiaries

    We have 20 active families around 80 or 90 people. We can provide holidays 52 weeks of the year, and we provide short breaks Monday to Friday and Friday to Monday. The whole of the family are able to enjoy the holidays offered, including siblings. The first annual ground rent is due December 2017 and this will cover us for 1 year; and allow free holidays to all of the families for that period.

    We have already fund raised for just of £50,000 to purchase and "fit" the brand new wheelchair accessible caravan "Chloe's Den". It was opened in January 2017, with a slot on Tyne Tees Television to celebrate. We have provided specailised profiling bed; washing facilities with wet room; accessible wheelchair for the beach; fitted the unit out to a very high standard; fitted ramp etc. We have a provision that we want to continue to offer free for years to come.
