Project information

Youth voice through song

Our project aims to build a society based on equality and respect so young people can reach their full potential. Gender and racial equality and ending violence against women and girls has a major role to play in this. Our young people will create a music video focusing on these sorts of issues.

  • Need

This project aims to protect young people at risk of female genital mutilation, forced marriage, honour based violence (HBV) and other forms of violence against women and girls by empowering them to understand their rights and how to seek help for themselves, their siblings or their friends. Young people must recognise when they are being forced into something they don't want, and should know what their rights are and how and where they can access help.

    - We will create a fun and entertaining music video, in which young people can be educated about their rights, leading to prevention of abuse.

    - This project will also help break cycles of abuse so that the next generation will be free from the constraints and pressures of 'honour'.

    - The music video will be a catalyst for conversation when it comes to these types of issues which often young people might not be able to talk about freely.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Protect young people at risk of female genital mutilation and other forms of violence against women

» Create a safe space where our young people can discuss challenging issues openly and share their concerns and where they can meet, study and train

    What success will look like

35 young women or girls who are in affected communities will speak out about the impact of the music video.

    Aim 2

Dispel myths around negative gender norms that feed into violence against women and girls.

» Train 70+ young people as peer educators and mentors who will then educate society on gender based violence.

    What success will look like

We will analyse and record the reaction from news and press regarding the music video.

    Aim 3

Empower young people to challenge negative rhetoric around sexuality, race and religion.

» Reach 15,000+ people directly through peer education workshops and training for front line professionals.

    What success will look like

We will use the music video as an education resource. After teaching we will always have feedback forms to help us understand how negative rhetoric has changed.

  • Impact

    - Widen the conversation around female genital mutilation (FGM)
    - Ensure that FGM remains on the top of political agenda.
    - Discuss how cosmetic surgery on the genitals of children is type 4 FGM and should therefore be illegal.
    - Make sure young girls and women know their rights, and are able to stand up for themselves.
    - Educate society in general about the prevalence of 'honour crime' and gendered violence in the UK.

None. We are completely confident that our project will be a success.

We will give donors a copy of our annual report.
